2007 Contests: A Retrospective

Stillwater, Ok
Bentonville, Ar
Salisaw, Ok
Bixby, OK

Art of BBQ(my home town comp)
Pine Bluff, Ar
Ponca City, Ok
Jenks, Ok(another home town cook)

I'll hit at least 12 next year, but these are for sure...

Did 6 last year -

Marshall - Too bad they decided to cut it out. Talking to the guys last year and kind of knew it was the last year. Too bad.
Tiger Shrine - Fun little event - kind of crammed in there, but not complaining, Jamie does it right!
Sedalia - I am always wishy washy on this one. Did not like hearing all the complaints about the People's choice (I ended up doing it to help out). If he pushes the awards up to 5:30 again then I will pass.
Glascow - loved it, except i was out in BFE.
Chillicothe - fun event - they take care of you. Judging was less to be desired.
Invintational - Way out in BFE - screwed up my times (thank god for Todd -Plowboy) I propably will only do it again if get in the invite.

Next year - with a new team meber IRADIATE - Probably going to do.

Jeff City
GAB - invite only - might do the open
Tiger Shrine
Sedalia (maybe)
Boone County Fair
Glascow
Chillicothe

Is Andy posting in drag again?

12 events this year, going to try and cut it back to 6-8 next year.

Snowshoe Grilling Challenge:
Great event to cure cabin fever, always a good time drinking bloody mary's and grilling on a chilly New England day
Grillin On the Bay: My team-mates cooked this one, we'll probably be back
Salisbury, Maryland: Well organized, nice venue, good prize money.
Norfolk, Virginia: Big prize money. But 1st year organization woes. Hopefully they give it another try and improve next year.
Limerock, Connecticut: Really cool venue at the racetrack. I could do without all the extra grilling categories.
Merrimack, New Hampshire:
I've cooked this one for the last 4 yrs, but won't go back next year. It's not bad, but overall not very cook friendly. No prize money, access in and out is difficult, I get sucked in every year looking for Jack qualification and NEBS TOY points but wont go next year
Lake Placid, New York: Great venue, but if I limit my contests this one may go.
Harpoon: Christmas in July for me, a highlight of my year.
Hudson Valley Ribfest: I was surprised at how nice this venue was, I'll be back to defend the GC.
American Royal BBQ Championship: If I was going to cut back to 2 contests it would be Harpoon and the Royal. I love the challenge of cooking two contests back to back and its a fun party.
Dover, Delaware: 20k, internet access and a casino should be requirements for ALL BBQ contests
Jack Daniels World BBQ Championship: Nothing like sipping Jack on BBQ Hill with all the top BBQ cooks in the country. A lot of my motivation for practice and traveling around is about getting into The Jack

Wish I could count the Jack or the Royal among mine but all in all a good year.

Grillin' on the Bay - First call ever followed by another. Well run and a fun day of grillin' (though it's not on the bay as advertised)

Merrimack, NH - Two more calls but there's other contests I'd prefer to do next year given limited time and resources.

Princeton, NJ - A MIM sanctioned event. 1 call and a great experience. We'll see if they do it again.

New Holland, PA - I'm ready to go back tomorrow. My first and second top 3 finishes ever, but beyond that just amazingly well run.

Memphis in May - Playing pit b*tch for Jack McDavid was a great experience and got to walk the stage with the team in whole hog. Definitely going back.

Salisbury, MD - Helped Vinny at this one. A ton of fun. One to consider next year.

Sayville, NY - Final contest of the year and it's looking to be great.

Now can anyone sell me their spot for Harpoon???

Here are the contests I cooked or went to this season, I cut back from the ten (and 70000 miles driven) I did last season.

Yardley I liked this contest the least of all the contests I did this year. I do a catering event the day before that pretty much funds my year so I will cook the contest again.

Lake Placid This is the closest contest to my home and a magical place. The ride to the town is gorgeous. The contest organizers bend over back wards for you to make the contest as good as they can.

Wildwood The biggest party on the East. I didn't cook the contest but taught 2 BBQ101 classes. Next season I'll probably cook the contest and teach only one class on Saturday. This is a contest that I seem to always do well at.

Harpoon The second closest contest to my home and the Vermont state championship. This is another big party and the most cooker friendly contest we cook. It's my biggest honor to be among the past GC's of the contest.

New Paltz This is another nice, well run and well organized contest.

New Holland This is my favorite contest. It's really special to travel back in time and see so many Amish people. The organizing crew do as much as they can for the 72 teams. I seem to do really well at this contest with a 6th overall as my worst finish.

Clarence I went to help another cook and really enjoyed the contest, the pumpkin festival is probably the best festival thats hooked into a BBQ contest that I cook.

Dover I've heard nothing but good things about this contest and I really look forward to cooking it this weekend.

All of the contests I cook now are because they are well run, cooker friendly, qualifiers and have a decent payout.

Wow, seems like we're not the only ones doing a little cutting back in 2008. I'm looking forward to hanging out with friends at some contests and helping wherever I can, doing some judging, co-organizing an event and cooking less contests. That will free up a solid week of vacation time that I plan to take by hopping in the car with Tammy and Taylor and getting the fark outta town for about 7 days and go somewhere fun! I've blown all of my vacation AND the wife's vacation time on BBQ for two years now. It's time the family gets some quality time outside of BBQ.

We really enjoyed competing this year! We would have liked to walk alot more but hey, theres always next year.

Yardley: We will not attend this contest again. We paid for a double space and it was given to another team with a Motorhome. We wound up in a 20 x 20 spot.We were without water and electricity most of the contest because they had too many teams on one circuit and the water spigot was about 200' away. We paid for a Porta Potty of our own that never came. We did the worse we have ever done. We had a good time but is was not worth the aggrevation. The contest was much better in Bristol.

Merrimack: This was a great contest for us. We did well with a 2nd in brisket, 4th in ribs and 8th in Pork. The contest was a pleasure to cook because it was very cooker friendly. A well run event.

Harpoon: This was the best contest we have ever cooked at. It was one big party with the Jello Shots, Cherries and copius amount of Beer. Our neighbors were terrific and we had the best time we have ever had at a contest. This is probably why we finished dead middle of the pack. We didn't care. It was a super weekend. Maybe next year we concentrate more on our cooking.

New Paltz: Fun contest and great to be next to Poobah and Willy B. We will be back. We just wish the bathrooms were a little bit closer.

New Holland: Family emergency, we did not cook this contest. We will be back next year.

Sayville: Who knows what is in store for Saturday. Our goal is always to have fun and do the best we can.

Mason City Iowa, Up in Smoke. Definately will be back. First contest and placed 3rd in ribs on the Spicewine. I know beginners luck.

we did 3 contests this year.

Lake Placid the whole Lake Placid/Saranac Lake region of the High Peaks is one of my favorite places on the planet, will probably become an annual trek.

Hudson Valley hometown contest and the place we made or debut in 06, we will be there until they don't let us come back anymore, then we will sneak in

Oilnktoberfest we actually had our best results here, dont know if we will be back though. Had a great time, just did not get a warm and fuzzy feeling about the contest.

will more than likely try to double that next year.....will probably try to get into Harpoon, Salisbury and Sayville II (like my confidence there will be a II).........

not sure where else, maybe Limerock and where is this Berks BBQ Bash place that you can fish at the contest? Think I might like to take a road trip and do a contest or 2 down south somewhere

This was our first year out.Had a blast.Cooked pro all contest in our first kcbs got 3rd in chicken beat lotta bull by one spot spoke with Mike after that what a great person.we have cooked 7 events this year hope to do that much or more next year.

Our first contest was a ibca event what a joke that was.The food sat on the turn in tables 30 to 45 minutes after we turned them in they were just grabbing people out of the crowd to be judges. The bad part of it the judges could see who turned what in they were next to the turn in tables.I won't cook that one again unless they get someone who knows how to the a better job.

oh man, I don't even know where to begin...
BEWARE - This could take awhile, we do about 12-15 a year.

Salisbury, MD - this is by far one of the best ones I have done (three years in a row)... Sandy Fulton has this 'organizer thing' down. Great people, great venue, bands, kids rides, VERY well run, good payouts, TRIPLE KCBS points (which is rare around these parts) and you may even get the chance to meet Jim Perdue. How good is that?
Memphis In May - missed it last year... we will NOT miss it again! So, chances are we won't make it to Yardley, PA unless they change the date...bummer, I really like that one. We did not have any of the issues some other people had...the Grand and GC trophies were fantastic, we didn't get one, and Tom puts on a good breakfast to boot! I loved the local grocery store too!
Lime Rock, CT - we had a BLAST at this event, since we didn't sign up to do all the extras... we just did ten categories, not fifteen like everyone else. Way far out in the middle of nowhere though. AND... it's Memorial Day weekend... isn't that the same as the GAB ...? ... I'd rather go down there, to be honest.
Peter's Pond - I SO hope this event keeps going and going and going. No real payouts, but it's WAY cheep to get in anyway so what can you expect? Also, it is one of the longest running New England events, and what a good time! The Cape in June... with 'private' beach access and HOT showers even! Plus, we get to celebrate Charlie and Carlotta's anniversary with them every year.... nuthin' better!
Merrimac, NH - I have always had a great time here, even though we NEVER do well. I think it is because we are having WAY too much fun ! It's pretty well run, it's a state championship, bands, kids stuff, air show, and fresh Budweiser...pain in the butt to get in and out at the designated times though. And the parking issues need work.
Lake Placid, NY - another one of the best in this region. Tons of stuff, very cooker friendly, hot showers, camping in the Olympic Oval, fireworks, cool trophies and big payouts, and this year it is on the 4th of July...even better!!!
Harpoon, VT - I cannot say enough about this one, my first EVER BBQ event! Hands down one of the best! Extremely cooker-friendly, while still taking care of all the 'festival business' that has to be done.... going back to defend our GC, fer sure. So, NO, sorry but you cannot buy our spot Vinny.

We normally take August off, chill out by the pool and re-group, but this year I am really pushing for New Holland, PA or Hudson Valley, to see what we can see.

Lowell, MA - the only Mass State so far and we consistently do VERY WELL... we'll be back - regardless of where they have it.
Harvard, MA - this was really fun. Relatively small event right now, payouts were well distributed, a couple of water and porta potty issues... they were easily fixed though. Fall festival in a beautiful town on a gigantic farm, bands, craft fair, and AWESOME FIREWORKS! Possibly a Mass state next year too... we are so there!
Clarence, NY - we LOVE LOVE LOVE Oinktoberfest!!! Another one that I had NO issues with at all. A wee bit on the expensive side since I always miss the late fee date...but the people and the payouts and the prizes are SO worth the entry fee and the long ride out, plus, if you work it right, you can do Niagara Falls or Cooperstown while you are out there. Bands, kids stuff, indoor bathrooms, swag bags, very well run, huge pumpkin festival with corn maze and pumpkin cannon. I just can't resist the possibility of snow either, PLUS, everyone there has already seen and laughed at our trusty, rusty, duct-taped pop-up, so ... we'll be back for the three-peat! Then it's a dynasty, right?
American Royal Invitational/Open - regrettably we decided not to road trip this one this year... Not the case next year... I am already planning it.
the Jack... you just never know how lucky you can be...
Best Of The Best - Douglas, Georgia - if we somehow can homeschool the kids and take off work for the months of October and into November, I would love to go back to this one. Kell knows how to run an event! The only thing, it is expensive to do both days, and driving from Mass, we aren't gonna do only the one. I'd recommend it to everyone though. Good Times and there are a TON of Florida teams there to play with.

whoa... shutting up now....

hope to see you all out there somewhere!!!

Every contest that we have cooked this year has been a good time.. There are one or two that probably will not be done again but being able to see all our friends...PRICELESS...Go cook a contest..Yeah there are contest out there that dont give you what you want, but hell you dont always get a hole in one...So its a hobby..Lets say you are shooting for a hole in one and you dont always get it...Is that your fault or someone else? We look at it this way these are people we would never see if it wasnt for bbq..Come on guys one or two bad contest..Whats to say that they will not make it better next year...Look at it as not what you receive as prize money but what you get out of the FRIENDSHIPS...Sorry if we made anyone mad with this one post but its about who you meet and what kind of friends you can make...NOT the money. We think if it was for the money most of us would not be cooking
