Shirley Fabrication Waiting list

Well that’s one way to look at it or you could say well I’m gonna charge 950 taking one cooker to San Francisco- or I can load two cookers, charge 1250 to go to San Fran and make a quick stop in Utah which is on the way to SF. Then it costs us 625 each and he makes 300 more..... but I’m sure that doesn’t make sense somehow....

you ever think of wear and tear on the vehicle too and the is insurance on the smoker ?

Yeah - I haven’t given up, I am still considering driving it too. I have been having a hard time finding a one way rental for a pickup truck that isn’t a rip off too, I checked and a one way flight to Tuscaloosa is only $85 - then I could throw it in the back and drive one way....
I dont know if it's a ripoff as much as that's the going rate today. Personally I wouldn't even consider hauling a 500-600lb cooker from Alabama to Utah for $950 and then a return trip. You might check Uhaul for one way prices. Good luck and I hope you get one. They are awesome cookers.

How does it do with the heat from the firebox?

Also, what thickness did you get?

As you can see in the pic, I had mine cut the length of the cook chamber, so the firebox is no problem. They also make a high-temp plastic if you are concerned.

Mine is 1/2" bamboo.

I live in FL and I think I paid Legendary $500 to deliver my cooker to me. There is no way I could have done it any cheaper by the time I spent a day to drive to Shirley, hotel, a day to drive back, meals, etc.
As it was, I had Tim, a great guy who has passed on, deliver it to my driveway on a Sunday afternoon, help me get it to my garage and showed me all about the cooker. I also saved paying the AL 11% sales tax so keep that in mind when you look at shipping costs as well.
Having Kevin's company deliver my Shirley was worth every $$$ I spent.

Didn't say anything about it not being fair... just makes the total cost of the cooker too high - for my budget. I still wonder how he can ship 1/3 more miles for the same money but that's his business... I'm not a freight shipper.

I think what he does is he waits for a certain amount of cookers ready for shipping in certain areas. That way he can keep prices down since he will be delivering to multiple people in the relatively same area. So its 1k a person on the west coast for delivery even if you are in utah versus california. Im guessing? :heh:

Shipping is always an issue. My quote was more than I expected until I did the math. 675 miles 1 way.
$200 - Alabama tax 10%
$200 - hotel (wife is picky)
$100 - food
$135 - gas (stopped here as I surpassed the quote)
$??? - trailer rental
$??? - my time

It was cheaper to let Kevin do all the work. Plus I've already met the guys at SF when I bought my trailer model. My quote to ship a cooker from a Texas builder was $300 to go 175 miles 1 way. The math made sense in my case.

Kevin is bringing my pit Saturday and like mentioned above by the time I took into consideration tax, hotels, food, gas and Uhaul I was close to Kevin’s quote. I decided my time was worth the extra little amount to bring it to me.

What are you guys talking about exactly with the Alabama tax? Is it more there then it would be in your own state or something? Im confused by this.

Sales tax rates in Bama vary by location, in Tuscaloosa you have a total of 10% currently that includes 4% state, 3% county and 3% city.

If Kevin picks up and delivers your cooker, you don't pay the state tax saving a couple hundred on a patio model and big bucks on a custom trailer cooker.

There's no title work on cookers or trailers required by the State of Alabama, therefore no certificate of origin or title work on the receiving end that would generate a sales tax bill in your home state for title or registration unless they require it by law.

LTL freight doesn't work that way. And, it's even worse for 'hot shot' rigs.

At the simplest, more weight equals more fuel which equals more dollars. Then there are things most people never realize like fuel taxes for each state you pass through and extra time for extra stops. Miles aren't the only thing that cost.

As for skirting STATE sales tax, you don't have to have the smoker hauled half way across the USA, only outside the STATE.

Some manufactures will 'allow' a short haul across the state line where you take delivery at a rest area or truck stop and haul it the rest of the way yourself.

This is definitely in the grey area. Whether it is ethical is a different topic. Once it is out of the state, the retailer doesn't (or didn't) have any requirement to collect sales tax. However, doing a short haul just to avoid sales tax is at best arguable as to legality and intent.

Thanks to the internet sales tax ruling, there is no way I would touch that type of transaction as a business as the tax and litigation liability is huge.

For me, I was really wanting an AZ BBQ Santa Maria grill but, transportation costs from Tucson to Dallas were just too much for me.

My solution was to not purchase. Then, a BBQ Brethern put one up for sale South of Fort Worth and problem solved!

Diito my Shirley from Little Rock and my Evie Mae from Shreveport. Notice a trend here! :-D

Well I just heard from Kevin at Legendary - No combined shipping - he was pretty funny about it - said something like "can I split your paycheck and we can split my bills?" but anyway -No bueno on that - I guess my Shirley just aint happenin' - he said it would be $950 to ship to Utah - I think I can get a lot more cooker for $3000 ...
But he did say the Bay Area would be "about the same" - I don't know how he can ship another 8-900 miles for the same price but that's what he said....
Also think that it isnt just the miles, it is also the space on his trailer. He has no shortage of cookers to ship, so a 'discounted' spot is literally lost money.

Either way, wish you luck in finding a cooker you like and getting it to you safely :thumb:

In your pic, it looks like it touches the firebox a bit, so I wondered. Funny thing is the high heat plastic looks to have a lower heat tolerance than the bamboo.

I hauled collector motorcycles around the country for over 5 years and would get logic like this thrown at me often.

The hauler needs to make $$ too, that's done by anticipating hauling more than one item at a time. So usually that "discount" you want is already built in.

I had some repeat customers beat me up at times for a better price, I generally refused to do it because shipping a 2nd or 3rd time for them was no cheaper for me than it was the 1st time.

Being on the road is a crappy life and most drivers never make the money they should, so don't begrudge them trying to make a living.

I’d try Estes, UPS, or Fedex. Chances are they have other items going to your area. No special trip equals better rates.

Well for a $2,000 cooker that’s only $80 in savings for state tax. Not a big deal at all. I think it will work out fine for me to pick it up at Shirley for multiple reason. 1. My wife is begging the cross country trip with the kids, 2. I get to meet some of the fine folks at Shirley! It would be quite the experience because I haven’t driven farther then Wyoming. I can see how the $5,000 cookers would be better off shipped for this reason, especially if Kevin charges a flat rate of 1k per cooker, though I’m sure that changes on size.
