Okay, how in the world did this thread get bumped down past page 3?

For RWalters and anybody else who is interested, I have my report on Cookin Pellets 100% hickory.

It is easy to say that it is easily my favorite pellet. The smell is incredible. It smells like I am burning hickory splits. It produces plenty (blue) smoke. Not much ash. I did a 9lb pork butt overnight for Sunday dinner. Flavor was very good. Probably the best one I have made. Still delicious as leftovers. And I am sort of getting tired of BBQ leftovers. The pellet size is uniform and small. No long pieces like Lumberjack so I am comfortable leaving the pit alone for overnight cooks. The only downside is the cost. $40/ 40lb bag from Amazon is steep. Supposedly they have a local distributor in Houston. I will call them. I do have another 40lb bag on order and supposedly it will arrive early May. I might consider buying bulk direct from

The CP is definitely by favorite so far. But the B&B mesquite really isn’t too far behind. But if I had a decent deal price wise I could use the CP hickory for every future cook and be a happy guy

$33 each for 40 pound bags if you order seven bags direct.

No question you bought the best pellet in my opinion. I unfortunately pay amazon prices since my local guy stopped carrying them. It’s the ONLY pellet I use, period! That good!

Just went and picked up a bag. $35 with tax. The distributor is Aztec Rentals in NW Houston. I think I was paying $12-$13 for 20 lb bags of LJ at my local butcher and about the same for B&B at H-E-B so not terribly much more. Academy is much cheaper on B&B and they have curbside p/u so that is still a great way to go. But I have enough pellets to keep me cooking for a couple months easy.

What do you guys think of CP perfect mix or black cherry? I will probably give the perfect mix a try next time I pick up.

The perfect mix is my favorite all time pellet. Once I calculated the cost per hour the overall cost difference didn't bother me any longer

Perfect mix is number 2 only behind hickory. I think smoke profile better with hickory but I like a touch more smoke flavor. If I remember right the perfect mix is a tad sweeter so not bad option for pork or chicken. My sweet spot is brisket and CP hickory!

LJ are only pellets I've burned other than the bag of Bear Mountain that came with the grill. The local dealer quit selling and I have probably a good 2 months supply left after that I'm going to Academy Sports to pickup some B&B. If I like them I'll stick with them, if not I'll probably go with a 15 bag cooking pellets bulk order or get in on a LJ bulk order.

Are Cookin Pellets really low on ash ? Any others ? I have burned Lumber Jack exclusively but in my Pellet Pro 1190 after a 4hr cook the ash level was as high as the botton holes in then fire put. I don't think I would attempt an overnight cook.

BTW Cookin Pellets websie has 15 40lb bags shipped for $390 ...or $26/bag. If they are the lowest ash I split a shippment. But if there are other pellets with low ash and an intense burn but cheaper... I'd look at that. I live in Moorpark, Calif. haven't checked if they ship to calif yet.

CP is very low ash. I proactively vacuum out GMG every 3-4 cooks, more frequent if I’m doing lots of large cuts. Usually just to keep it clean as I’ve never had an issue with ash accumulation.

Forgot to mention. I cook 90% of the time overnight, I cook mostly brisket and pork shoulder. Never had issues with CP and ash. Or with GMG for that matter. Never once had issue with smoker burnout or shutoff.

CookinPellets are my favorite as well. Lumberjack is probably second, although I have to say the last bag of Comp Blend Lumberjack I had were not smokey at all to the point that I was really questioning how it was even possible. I thought something was wrong with my grill. Now running the CP Hickory and they are fantastic. Super smokey (by pellet grill standards) and burn great.

Thanks. I also religiously vacuum out after / before every cook. I don't like the accumumated mess. Try to keep the smoker as clean as possible.

I can't see myself paying $1/LB. Webstaurant.com has Bear Mountain 20LB bags for $15 including shipping. Still not as low as B&B or LJ.

I just ordered a Pitts and Spitts 1250. Pretty excited. They seemed to have a pretty good deal. Free cover and free 2 piece drip pan.. was between the Pitts and Yoder.

Congrats!!!! What a beast of a cooker! Can’t wait to see ya receive it and put it to good use :)

Just gotta say I love your enthusiasm for all of this. Mak, Yoder, GMG, don't matter. Always a kind word and always in to help. Pretty cool.

Appreciate that, Matt! There is soooooo much more to this hobby/passion that cooker brand/type. I get excited when I see people buying and using cookers to feed family and friends. People, relationships and time spent together around a fantastic grilled/smoked meal has way more value than any specific cooker :)

Thanks. I know you are a Mak guy so appreciate your enthusiasm. Maks are awesome machines but don’t quite line up with my needs. My brother in law has a 2 star and loves it. I needed the size that the 1250 offers as it’s pretty common for 1/2 of our lake house neighborhood come over for dinner. I will take our Memphis pro back home and replace it with the P&S. It was a tough decision between the P&S and Yoder but in the end the cheaper overall prices and greater size of the Pitts won me over. I’ll keep my Weber kettle close when I need an extra hot grill.

The most important feature to me that all of the above brands offer is that they are MADE IN THE USA! I hope the world puts China out of business (typed on an iPhone:mmph:
