A while back, I took some of y'alls advice and started using nitrile food prep gloves on top of cotton gloves for handling hot food on the pit. It works great! Definitely won't go back to the cheapo, gross silicone "food prep" gloves I bought off eBay.

However, I do feel inclined to warn you...make sure to briefly check and make sure that the finger of your nitrile glove doesnt break when you put your big sasquatch hand into it right before opening a steaming hot foil pouch of vegetables...otherwise the steam/liquid will get directly on the cotton glove below, trapped against your skin, resulting in a nice second-degree burn that you can watch as it literally blisters before your eyes. A guy I know, yeah, this one guy, certainly not me, it happened to him last weekend.

If it does happen to you though, the same guy that this happened to (definitely not me!) strongly recommends using a little Dermoplast spray followed by a couple ice cold, salted and limed Modelos to ease your pain.

Just sayin'. :thumb:

I (I mean, someone I know) has done the same thing. It is not a pleasant experience, so I'm told.

Thanks for putting out the warning! This will no doubt keep someone from doing the same thing you..err..umm.. (a guy) did.

In all my years of bbq I oddly have never done that........this week.......but it’s only Monday so hang tight :-D.

I double nitrile most of the time if I’m pulling a bunch of stuff. I use the gloves from Costco that aren’t as thick as some of the black heavy duty gloves people get where one layer is probably enough over the cotton.

At least you have an excuse. At least once per contest I will get in a hurry and forget to put the nitrile glove on at all!

This is what it sounds like when gloves fail:

#$%#, MY HAND!

#$%^ ^&#@ IT HURTS!

I’ve said those and more! It happens to me about every other competition! I have gotten very good at stripping off the offending gloves, but it is usually in the middle of turn ins, so I grab fresh gloves and keep going, swearing as I go :-D

It dawned on me that I should put on a nitrile glove, then the cotton gloves, and then another nitrile glove, but I never seem to remember :becky:

I use a 5mil nitrile for applying rubs and general prep but for handling hot meat I go to a 7mil over knit gloves. I also buy the 7mil gloves in a larger size. So far no tears with the heavier gloves. I've got 3 butts coming off the smoker this evening so I hope my luck holds.

Ouch. Or the time I was in flip flops and had the foil pan fold up on a pork butt as I was taking it out. Nice second degree burns across the top of my feet...... dumb dumb dumb

Hmm. Silicone gloves, unwieldy as they are, are sounding pretty good
Its odd, but, I have a pair of those big old silicone gloves I got when I purchased a Rotisserie. They just plain big , gloppy and ugly. But I have learned over 40 years of cooking they never have failed me. Ever. I do the nitrile + cotton stuff now. But, i still use the big floppy gloves with the Rotisserie. Habits are hard to break

I know that flip flops are a horrible idea around the pit/grill. Logically, I know this, and I've had a few close calls, but yet I still wear them during the hot months (aka 3/4 of the year). My time is coming, I'm sure. Not looking forward to it, but I know it'll happen.
