Congrats guys! Can’t wait to see you two receive and put your new MAK’s to use :)

Yep, LJ pellets are great. I have also used and really like Cookin’ Pellets. There are some other great brands (B&B mentioned above), but these are the only two that I have experience with.

Very much appreciated. I’ll be leaning on your advice (and others here in the forum) as the pellet cooker is a new concept for me.

We’re (the brethren/sistren) all here to learn from one another and offer a hand when possible :)

Whatcha been cooking on up to this point? Curious.

I upgraded from a Traeger Lil Tex to the YS640 earlier this year. So far I have done a bunch of shorter cooks on the YS640 and as expected, it's pellet consumption is higher then the much smaller Traeger.

This weekend, I had the YS640 running for about 20 hours for an overnight brisket, ribs, nachos and mac & cheese. I was looking at the pellet consumption and I think I used about 1 bag which is very similar to what I would need on the Traeger, maybe a bit more. It takes longer to heat up the YS640 but it retains heat much better.

Man, that right there is some good eating :)

So how much pellets do i need to keep on hand. How long does a bag typically last? One cook? multiple?

Depends on duration and temp. Obviously the higher both go, the more you use. I don't pay too much attention to pellets per cook, but no single cook will use up a whole bag.

Since I buy locally, my rule of thumb is that I have at least one unopened bag on hand, ie once I break the seal on my last bag I go and buy more.

I also store my used pellets in a 5 gallon bucket with a gamma seal lid. Label the bucket with the type of pellets with some tape. Cooking temp will dictate how fast you burn thru the pellets. I try to keep 1 unopened bag of pellets for back up.

Only 1 unopened bag?!?! Not sure I’d be able to sleep at night... lol. What it an apocalyptic event were to take place and you were to have to go into underground hiding with your pellet cooker and ONLY one bag of pellets. The thought... [emoji27]. Almost as bad as letting my cellphone battery drop below 90%... lol.

What I didn't say was how many 5 gallon buckets of pellets I have.
Think I am up to 5 buckets now and climbing. Been using Q-pellets pecan and Cherry, mixed together in a 50/50 blend. Picked up a bag of Cookinpellets perfect mix which I have been using the last couple of cooks. I have 2 unopened bags of lumberjack Comp blend I bought a couple of weeks ago on sale at Dicks. So can never have to many buckets. lol

Thanks whats the purpose of storing them in this type of bucket? Also do you take unused pellets out of the smoker between smokes?

Ok, I feel much better!!! Crisis averted :)

I am a new Yoder YS640 owner. About 2 months now. I am still experimenting with pellets and watching my burn rate. I never gave burn rate much thought until I did briskets.

What I found was that having my Yoder on for 10 hours, I burned nearly an entire 20 pound bag: or about 2lbs of pellets per hour. Just a little less than that because the hopper still had pellets in it. I did a second brisket that repeated the same pattern: 10 hours of burn time and just about a complete 20 pound bag, or 2 lbs per hour.

That was more than I had anticipated, but, still not much of a concern. I ordered and will take delivery of 80 pounds of Competition pellets perfect mix today. I like the blend.

The Yoder performed wonderfully. Great smoke, absolutely rock solid temp control and a perfect end product. Absolutely perfect.

Pellets can absorb moister, which can degrade them. So if your in a humid or wet area it is best to dump them and store them when the cooker is not in use. But if you use the cooker a lot during the week it should not be a issue. I tend not to dump it during summer but do during winter. When my MAK is not is use it is under a covered patio. If you find that you grill is not getting to a normal high temp, it is usually the pellets have collected some moister.

One unopened bag?! I have 300lbs. Is there something wrong with me?

Nothing wrong with you at all. I don't have the room for storage of a lot of pellets. But I don't need to. I have access to Q-pellets, BBQs Delight, Cookinpellets and Lumberjack all within 5 miles from me. So I don't have to worry about stocking up.

Hi all!

Question about Smoke-n-Hot Grill Outdoor cooking center. A while back LongIslandEd wrote an initial review of this unit. His last activity looks to be from a couple of years ago.

Anyone since then bought this unit (or done any kind of business with them)? Thoughts? Looks like it has everything I want: stainless steel, PID, direct open flame, pellet drop system (rather than feeding inline with burnpot). They describe the combustion system as like having your very own jet flame burner or something like that. I’m wondering how the quality and build have held up since he bought it or what your experience or knowledge is around this brand. Thanks.

WOW! I would love to have local access to all those brands!

I don't have inexpensive local access to any of those. Wish Cookinpellets sold locally.

Nothing wrong. I have 200lbs or so and I don't use my pellet grills very often. I also use 5 gallon buckets and tape labels. I'm always changing pellets and dumping my hopper out. 20 pound bag will do 3 7-8 hour cooks on my little Pellet Pro.
