Congrats on the new toy! I get so anxious waiting for stuff like that. Personally I've been waiting on my grates to come in for my new smoker so I can cook more things at once. I've been chomping at the bit for just shelves to come in, so I'd imagine how excited you are.
That guy is a such a prick. I can't imagine why anyone would want to pay him to learn anything. He probably wouldn't even teach you any secrets that won him any comps.
Bet he only teaches women how to make sandwiches.
I've met Myron years ago in a competition and he was nothing but friendly. The persona he has on TV is just for show. In real life he is a very friendly person.
About 15 years ago, we used to have a Memphis in May sanctioned BBQ comp locally. He came down for the first 3 years of it's existence. Myself and my friends from work were just getting into the whole smoking meat thing and our boss wanted us to represent the company and created our company cook team.
Honestly, we had NO Idea what we were doing lol. We were terrible. We all grilled food at home, but none of use really ever smoked anything, aka real BBQ. Our food was BAD. We overcooked things and basically produced expensive jerky.
That first year Myron introduced himself to several teams including our own. At the time there were only like 5 "known" pro teams there and the other 30 or so teams were local guys with little to no experience. When he came across us and listened to our story, he knew right off the bat that we were lost. He spent a couple of hours with us giving us pointers and tips that helped us out a lot.
The next time that event came around he stopped by to see how we were and shared more advice. We did decent that time around.
The next year we got our first ever trophy, 3rd place in Ribs. The 4th place guy? Myron. He congratulated us and told us we had come a long way. He was nothing by a gentleman and he helped a bunch of nobodies learn the basics...people he was competing with.
I'll always hold Myron in high regard for that. It takes a lot of to reach out to people you don't know, that are competing against you and actually help them get better.
Because of him, our little team project turned into a decent little team, although we only compete a handful of times a year. Thanks to him, I picked up a whole new hobby and obsession.
