Some CVS stores carry the RO briqs in the red bags (20 or 18 pound I forget which), but not all stores. Look in the larger stores that have more floor space. I have two CVS's near me in Irvine that stock it.

Really? I've been using the RO briqs in the Red bag, and I haven't had a problem with that "just lighted briquette" odor. I usually let the fire burn a while and start cooking when I get a clean smelling smoke, though.

I am curious about this RO Chef Select product. I'll see if my local Restaurant Depot will bring it in for me.

the RO briqs were in a GLOSSY red bag, I got them from Kmart on special. maybe they had them stored next ot something and got funky. I never tried them again because the stench was so nasty. maybe I just got a bad bag...

I've tried the briquettes and every time they get lit in the chimney they STINK like petroleum. And they take FOREVER to get fully lit. Cowboy lump isnt bad but burns fast. So far Kingsford blue bag is they way to go for me. Hope it helps. God luck

I'm not claiming to be competition quality or anything, but I used to be all about lump, then one day I got on here and the Kingsford coupon was posted. Besides the fact that I have 10 bags in my basement, I've actually grown to like blue-k and really don't understand what the big deal is? Burns good, taste fine, never had any complaints. What do I know?

Since Menards carries RO products I emailed them last week and asked if they could get the Chef Select, but according to the reply I received yesterday they can't. Looks like I might have to go the online DoItBest route.

RO briq is usually cheap here. It doesn't seem to burn as consistantlyt as K. Lots of ash.

Menards usually runs a special a couple times a year up here. RO in the spring and fall for about $4.45/bag - about 25% off their regular price. I take home as many as the SUV will handle. Have never asked if they have pallet pricing though...

I have been doing burns alternating between 70% kingsford briquette/30% RO Steakhouse lump and 70% RO Premium briquettes/30% RO Steakhouse lump. I have been doing a chimney of one mix..... letting it burn down to little or nothing and then a chimney of the other mix. That way I've had direct comparisons under a variety of conditions during my last 4 or 5 cooks. My observation each time I've compared is that while burning RO Premium briquettes the cooker runs 15-20 degrees hotter than when burning Kingsford, and the RO always burns competely by the end of a burn while Kingsford does sometimes. Definitely less ash with Royal Oak. I'll be using Royal Oak when cooking under difficult conditions, but will be using Kingsford when cooking in ideal conditions for quite some time, as I still have 120 lbs of it I got at Home Depot on sale.

Thanks for the responses.

That RO chef's select sounds perfect for what I'm looking for. Anyone know where in L.A. or O.C. I can get it??

Hey Smoothsmoke - I know this is months after the fact, but I found Chef's Select at California Charcoal & Firewood in Commerce for like $8 a bag. It seems to have some wood chips in the mix, and so far, I like it lot.

Any updates or more opinions on the RO chefs select briquettes? Stubbs is just too high, and I don't like all the ash I end up with using K.

Wish I could compare RO Chefs Select but have no idea who has it here. The single advantage I found to K briquettes over RO premium briquettes was that they light a little faster. More ash for sure!

I've been using RO Chef's select in my smoker only, great burn time. I've been using regular RO briquettes (in the red bag, not minit lite though) in my performer. I do a lot of indirect on my performer using the baskets and the bigger briquettes (chef's select) don't seem to work as good/get as hot in the baskets, maybe simply because you can't get as many in the basket and they don't fit as well as the smaller ones.

I don't see a problem with ash or any funny smell from either.

Just bought 2 more bags of the RO regular briquetts from Buchheit's over the weekend for less than $6 a bag.

I'm on my second 40 lb bag, the jury is still out, no complaints, burns faster than K, the price is what I like! $13.99!

Brian, not to hijack the thread (I like the Royal Oak briquttes better than KF Blue also) Are you using an 18" WSM ring inside the 22" there? Interesting idea for fuel consumption reduction???

Thanks! That's good to know, since I'm using small fire rings in both my cookers to keep fuel consumption down. When the economy bites you, you figure out how to do stuff without giving up the things you love.

Thanks, so...Will I won't be able to put as much charcoal in my little wsm if I use the big RO chefs select briquettes?
