I personally think that the jump to real wood will give you a better taste and a better feel about your hobby. Not to mention the professional approach of using splits. I've never seen a pellet the size of a beer can or 15" long.
However, there are others that will ostracize you if you abandon the little bitty pieces of wood. But, if you run out during a cook, you can always cut up match stems.
