Does it matter what type of oak to use as a fuel source? Asking, because I have about 5 acres of wooded land (mostly oak) and was thinking about dropping a tree or two to use in my char-griller off set smoker. I also noticed that our Lowes sells bundled wood. It just says "hardwood" on the label, but it also says campfires, cooking, ect. Can I use this wood in my smoker? Can I use this wood for fire and the packaged "chunk" wood (Hickory, Mesquite, Apple, etc) for the smoke flavor???

all oak is good oak..

Yeah, but you need to go pretty light on the poison oak.

Seriously though, most oak is very good for smoking, but they do have different flavor profiles.

What type of oak do you have there Lockon?

Bundled hardwood is good for warmth, and cooking when providing heat to a cast iron pot or skillet....but since it is a mix, you have no control over he smoke flavor imparted to your BBQ offerings.

I think we have Black Oak (in Missouri)...maybe some White Oak?? I should have paid more attention in Botany class  For those of you city folks....where do you get your wood from?

Oak will work just fine.Just make sure it's has been seasoned for several months.
