Sam's Choice Briqs

jpw is on the vicodin again...

Well we better get used to limited choices in charcoal briquettes! Fark Rancher! It was a flash in the pan! Or else some other chain would be carrying it, I've got @20 bags left and doubt (never say never) if I'd buy anymore. But when I take a look in the Garden section of the 2 Wal-Marts nearby, they have pallets STACKED full of Sam's Choice, that is somewhat of an indicator of what we have to look forward too. Not too long ago I was hearing rumors of Royal Oak going out of business!

I may get blasted on here but here it goes. You have another choice other than Kingsford, Royal Oak, Rancher. It is called Wicked Good Charcoal. The Briquettes are second to none. Not a sales pitch just cold hard fact. Check out your local dealer and a least try a bag, it will sell itself. Just my humble opinion.

I would love to try it, I had a local source. But as far a I know, no one has it around here....

I'm a recent convert to WGC. Years ago I used Canadian Maple Leaf but that dried up around these parts so I've been using Kingsford. I used WGC last weekend in a WSM and got an 18 hour clean burn on 11 lbs. The natural binders mean you can throw it on the fire raw and there is virtually no waste (dust, chips, chunks, etc.) in the bag when done. It's as good as the Maple Leaf and in the end, cost little more than Kingsford.

According to the web site, these folks carry WGC and are about 45 miles from you.

I would like to try the Wicked Good charcoal, but they do not have a dealer in Texas. Anyone order this stuff online reasonably priced? Their website wants $40 shipping for 2 11# bags of briqs and 2 11# bags of lump. Im not cheap, but dayum thats $12 more than the coal itself. Im mainly interested in the briq's.

I've used the Wicked Good Briqs in my clay Kamado for grilling, used about 25 and fire them up with the weed burner. They burn hot and clean and when I'm done grilling I shut all the vents down and smother them, the next time I grill I throw a few new briqs on and fire it again. Hardly any ash but $$pendy!! The Weekend Warrior Lump lasts me forever in the BGE! Very Good stuff!

Would love to try the wicked good here too.lol Gotta take what you can get. Interesting to see the various opinions here. Great input as always guys.

we switched to sams and started winning our first year i wont use anything else when i use charcoal

I've used it in my WMS and in the drum, mixed with lump, and haven't had a problem. Consistent temps (230 in WSM - 240ish in UDS) and good burn times. Maybe I'm lucky - only bought two bags so far.

Alright, I want to just admit that I was wrong. I used 2 bags of Sam's Choice Briqettes over the weekend, and it is crap. Maybe I forgot how bad the ash production was because I hadn't used it in awhile, but 2 bags filled up over 1/2 of my 36 gallon garbage can with ash. After that I moved back to the Royal Oak Lump I had in the garage and all is now right with the world. Went to Wallys and got 7 more bags of Royal Oak Lump so I wouldn't be tempted to stray based on price again anytime soon.

Will be using this post to remind myself in the future to stick with RO Lump or some brand of Lump going forward....
