How much per pound do you pay for different cuts? I never really know what is a good deal.

Anything from a Flank Steak, Rib Eye to a Pork Butt.

Etc..

Dan

Ribeye varies by the store anywhere from 8-12 per pound
Butts have gone up in price lately to 1.50 per pound by the case
Spares are 1.99 lb
Baby backs are 2.50-3.50 lb

beef ribs: 1.99-2.49
butts - 1.49-1.99
shoulders .99-1.99
spares - 1.49 (frozen) - 2.49 (fresh)
baby backs 2.99 - 3.49
rib eye 3.99-5.99
tri-tip 2.99-4.99
filet mignon 5.99-10.99

these are all non-Costco prices, by the way.

It's going to vary greatly based on location.

Here in Michigan and Indiana, just regular grocery store prices are roughly:

Butts: $2.79
Full spares: $2.99
Baby backs: $3.99
Packer brisket: $4.99
Ribeye steaks: $12.99
Beef tenderloin (whole) $14.99
Tri-tip: $5.99

Now keep in mind, those are grocery store prices here when not on sale. When there are sales there are usually some really good deals, especially on the pork products. Like $1.19 for butts or $1.49 for spares. But beef has just been downright expensive for the past year. And of course, prices are lower at the area wholesale clubs and sometimes Walmart, or if you buy by the case, etc.

Now if you're talking wholesale prices for restaurant, prices are quite a bit better. Even briskets at under $3/lb.

Boston butts bone in, roughly $1.75/lbs, spares/st. Louis $1.80/lb, pork belly/side meat $1.10/lbs thats all i can recall off top of my head. I buy from a butcher shop not grocery store generally.

We've been pretty spoiled down here in Texas, whole packers go for $2.18 per pound (they ran on the Fourth of July week at $1.77), pork spares are around $2.97 (St Louis cut) and Top Sirloin goes for about $5.97. I got a picnic ham on sale for .99 cents per pound last December, it was a ten pounder and ran right at $10.00. I think that everyday price is right at $1.49 or so. The butts are a little more at $2.97 I think, not sure on that one it's been a while since I bought one. Our local grocery chain is HEB, they have some nice meat and good prices!

Those are really good prices for Southern California, especially in Anaheim! I lived there back in the seventies before everything got crazy expensive out there. Do you shop at Vaughns or do they even exist anymore?:-D

North Alabama

Packer Brisket 2.38-2.58 per pound
Pork Butt 1.99 per pound

Beef is up in our area. 800 pound steers are going for 1.75 per pound on the hoof at the auctions. Old cows are getting 1.00 per pound.

That's a pretty fair assessment of what's here pre-sale except reverse the tri-tip and rib eye prices.

Just head over to CostCo in Roseville and know you will always be getting a descent deal for the area.

I buy a 1/4 of a cow and 1 hog every year. More meat than we can eat in a year and it is usually maybe $400 total.

Spare Ribs $1.99
Baby Back $2.99
Choice Tri Tip $3.99
Pork Shoulder $1.49

Bone in chicken breast $.99
Boneless chicken breast $1.99

You guys are making me cry. We pay anywhere from 2x to 5x those prices here.

I work for the Aussie division of a Fortune 500 company, and we often have visitors over from the states. They can't believe what restaurants charge for a steak, and the last guys I had over worked out we pay more here for Aussie lamb at the supermarket or butcher, than what they do back home.

Forget oil, meat sellers are the cartels to look out for in Australia!
