Take a breath!
Well, here I am. Feels like I've finally admitted to having a compulsive addiction and am going to my first meeting...
Born in Texas, but pulled from my roots as a tot, I grew up eating tri-tip and Santa Maria style Q in Southern and Central CA. But I've always longed for true Texas style, deep-smoke tenderness and flavor that is my rightful heritage.
Saturday night the wife and I were enjoying a quiet house while our daughter was torturing her grandparents at the mall. The TV remote landed us on the food channel during a show about a chili and BBQ competition. We were hungry at the time which made the show all the more interesting. Then my wife made the mistake of asking me what I wanted to do the following day for fathers day. "Spend all day in my jammies reading about BBQ on the lap-top while you fix some of that chili..." To my surprise, she was itching to try some chili also.
Fast forward 72 hours and I've become convinced that what is missing from my life is an Ugly Drum Smoker and the wits to use it righteously.
So here I am. Not as alone as a once was, now with a sense of purpose, ignorant though it may be. My quest is for the quintessential UDS. The Zippo lighter of smokers. Please send me your UDS links, UDS photos, UDS tips and UDS advice. I'm a commercial photographer and a half-assed amateur fabricator. If the planets do so align, I might tackle the UDS step-by-step project that seems so conspicuously missing from these pages.
Thanks for listening.
