• xenforo has sucessfully updated our forum software last night. Howevr, that has returned many templates to stock formats which MAY be missing some previous functionality. It has also fixed some boroken templates Ive taken offline. Reat assured, we are working on getting our templates back to normal, but will take a few days. Im working top down, so best bet is to stick with the default templates as I work thru them.

Last night I grilled some sausage and had too much charcoal in the pit
Following the advice of one of the Brethren I shut the upper and lower vents. Voila! The fire went out and all the left over charcoal is there for me to use next time! This is truly a miracle and includes some briquettes that are partially ashed over.
To me this is amazingly cool :shocked:

Just thought I would share.

Yep! Most kamado-type grills will let you do this!

Doesn't a regular kettle let you shut off the top and bottom vents to kill the fire?

I do this and have done this with every charcoal cooker I ever had. I really cannot remember the last time I cooked anything on my OTP where I used all fresh charcoal. Pretty much the same goes for the LSG.

Depends. If kettle/lid is out of round, or if blades of the OTS have bent a bit, or if your kettle is brand new and the rim hasn't gunked up yet, it might not seal up well enough and coals will still burn out.

Got it. Makes sense.

I use the leftovers to start a minion/snake method long smoke.

I find using the leftover charcoal gets to TBS much quicker

If you have your coals banked along the side, to speed extinguishing them it helps to spread them out when you are done cooking.

Yep....and actually you can kill the fire just closing the top vents with the bottoms open.
