• xenforo has sucessfully updated our forum software last night. Howevr, that has returned many templates to stock formats which MAY be missing some previous functionality. It has also fixed some boroken templates Ive taken offline. Reat assured, we are working on getting our templates back to normal, but will take a few days. Im working top down, so best bet is to stick with the default templates as I work thru them.

Long...
I just bought a bag of Hickory wood chunks from Home Depot. They are covered in white powder and green. (AKA MOLD?) Am I farked or can I salvage this somehow. Farking up a good smoke.

I'd take the bag back & get a new one, which I would open in the store before leaving...I've never seen this problem with the hickory chunks I get from HD.

I don't know if I'd use them GnP. Frankly they sound kind of gross. Can you take them back and see about getting an uninfected bag?

I'm gonna do that...However, I'm in the middle of the smoke now and I'm home alone. Can I put some Mesquite chunks in there or will that change the flavor drastically? Thanks Ron

I definitely would NOT use the bad chunks-take it back. If it were me I would toss in a couple of chunks of the Mesquite--don't know what you are cooking or how long a cook it is, but I don't think a little mesquite would fark things up--after all that is all a lot of folk use to cook with.

I've got a butt and a chuck roast on there. I'm 4 hours in. Thanks for the replies. I'll use the mesquite for the next hour and let royal oak finish the rest of the day.

Gook luck and have fun. Sounds like you will be fine.

That's why I don't buy chunks in the sealed plastic bags HD sell them in. I'll get the mesh bag if they have it, or skip it totally.

Four hours in? What's your internal temps? If you've over 150 the food probably isn't accepting much smoke at this point forward ... just go with straight lump til you're done. But as stated, a little Mesquite should be fine.

Then return it to HD when you have time.

I have some seasoned cherry, apple and pecan at my house if you want to run over and get some.

If they are covered definitely don't use them - probably been sitting in a warehouse too long. I cut my own wood so it's not an issue but one of the local firewood supply places sorts them for me too when I'm running low. I don't have an Uber stick burner so after splitting my wood I setup my miter saw and make my own wood chunks. It seems silly but it works.
