• xenforo has sucessfully updated our forum software last night. Howevr, that has returned many templates to stock formats which MAY be missing some previous functionality. It has also fixed some boroken templates Ive taken offline. Reat assured, we are working on getting our templates back to normal, but will take a few days. Im working top down, so best bet is to stick with the default templates as I work thru them.

I'm trying to find the best wood - rub combo for pork. I'm happy with the smoke flavor from my current ~ 70/30 oak to apple mix that i currently run but still don't believe i've found the perfect rub. I've tried so many recipes from online that i think i've circled back to where i started. Has anyone found a store bought rub that changed your life? :-o If so, please share.

Equipment used: I'm cooking on an old school (had it forever) offset stick burner.

thanks

I wouldn't say they've changed my life, but Plowboy's Yardbird rub for store bought and Chris Lilly's pork rub are my usual go-to's.

Chris Lilly's pork rub:
1/4 cup dark brown sugar
1/2 cup white sugar
1/2 cup paprika
1/3 cup garlic salt
1/3 cup kosher salt
1 tablespoon chili powder
1 teaspoon oregano leaves
1 teaspoon cayenne pepper
1 teaspoon ground cumin
1 teaspoon black pepper
-----------
Pork injection
3/4 cup apple juice
1/2 cup water
1/2 cup sugar
1/4 cup salt
2 tablespoons Worcestershire

I like experimenting with different smoke woods and wood combos, but usually come back to a cherry and apple combo.

I don't have garlic salt, but have garlic powder. Garlic salt = 1/2 salt 1/2 garlic, you suppose?

Anyone find value in blending in other pepper powder in with the paprika? Like Ancho chile Powder? Or do these things not really translate into a flavor difference? A rub is so cooked much of the flavors have evaporated away. Different in a sauce, obviously.

I used to make my own rubs, they were good, but not outstanding...

I stumbled upon Oakridge Rubs when I was trying to get some rub to some of our deployed soldiers. I have to say, I'm sold on Oakridge, low sugar and lower salt content than others I have tried.

I do try other rubs from time to time, but I return to Oakridge after each cook because they are simply outstanding.

The Owner Mike is also an active Brethren on this site....
If you are looking for something different, try these hand-crafted quality rubs that are far from the ordinary rubs, you won't be disappointed.

For those who do not wish to order a large amount of rub to try, OakRidge sells sample packets that offer you a chance to try a variety of rubs for less than the cost of a single rub.

I still need to try some Oakridge Rubs. Heard nothing but good things about them.

I don't have garlic salt, but have garlic powder. Garlic salt = 1/2 salt 1/2 garlic, you suppose?

Three parts salt to one part garlic powder, Ted.

on a store bought rub I love Slap Your Daddy , Swamp Boys and my new favorite Oakridge .

I just did 3 butts for a company pre-holiday lunch and used the Oakridge Pork and Chicken rub. Smoked with Hickory and Apple and they turned out wonderful. When the boss goes back for 3rds I think maybe I did something right. Oh also when I wrapped I used 1/4 cup of Grape juice on each. Love me some Oakridge rubs.
