• xenforo has sucessfully updated our forum software last night. Howevr, that has returned many templates to stock formats which MAY be missing some previous functionality. It has also fixed some boroken templates Ive taken offline. Reat assured, we are working on getting our templates back to normal, but will take a few days. Im working top down, so best bet is to stick with the default templates as I work thru them.

For about 1000.00-1500.00. I have a UDS now and i like it but want something nice that a little more easier to clean out and what not. Again i am lookin for a decent model.

I'm looking at that same price point. The options I narrowed down to were:

Lang 36 patio
Yoder Wichita
Shirley fab custom 36

All seem to be good smokers, just depends if you want a traditional flow vs reverse flow. Shipping is also a pain on a lot of the cookers. Check with Yoder to see if there is a dealer near you. If there is that might be the best option for the $$$.

I was quoted $500 to ship the lang to MN. Which would put the 36 patio right at $1600. shipping for you would probably be about the same, maybe a little less.

I would look at,

Hasty Bake or Big Green Egg. The versatility of these make them excellent choices if you plan to focus on single unit.

Do you want something you just push a button and put meat on, something set and forget, or something you mess with? The style makes a huge difference. With your budget you can afford a huge variety of great backyard cookers. Also, do you want to smoke, grill, or bake? Do want to do all three? Some units are excellent smokers but terrible grills. Some are good at both. Some are just grills. What are you interested in cooking?

What style of cooker are you interested in? That would probably help narrow the search. Cabinet? Offset? Kamado? Looks like Kamado and offset have been addressed. If you're looking at cabinets I would throw Humphreys into the list. Solid cookers right in your price range. The battle box is right at $1500 if memory serves..

I know with my UDS it only needs to be cleaned out after 3-5 cooks and then it's just lifting out a pan and emptying it with an occasional scraping of some grease on it now and then so it couldn't be easier. So you could make your existing cooker easier to clean.

What part is the "what not" What do you want the cooker to be able to do?

I have another cooker I made that burns splits only and it can go probably 15 -20 cooks without needing the ash cleaned out. The most i have to do is clean the grate with a foil ball.

A lot depends on your needs but a Weber Ranch Kettle is very versatile. Possibly a WSM 22.5 for $399 and save the cash for accessories and meat? If you want to go with a RF offset a Lang 36 would be a good choice.

If you are not going to pack and transport, I would look at a Big Joe Kamado. Smoker, grill and oven all rolled into one. Does wonders for chicken skin :-D

Check out the Bell Fab in Tulsa, OK. Craig Bell makes a one off offset smoker to your particular needs and specs. His material and fab is first class and very reasonablly priced. give him a shout at: [email protected]. He is a great guy to deal with.

With that budget I would be a +1 on the Weber Ranch Kettle

Hasty Bake Gourmet. Super versatile and can cook a good amount of food when needed. Its like the swiss army knife of charcoal cookers. :-D

I got a Kamado big Joe recently and love it but still part of me wishes I went with a Humphery's.

I wen't through this recently.

The thing that's going to hit you in your price range is shipping and tax. Most of these cookers weigh a lot, count on shipping around $300 or more and a couple hundred dollars in tax. That takes your $1000 cooker to $1500 pretty quick.

I started looking at builders near me and ended up with a used Backwoods Chubby G2 about 1 1/2 hours away. No tax, no shipping.

Good luck

I have a Lang 84 deluxe and love it. I would like to have a smaller one like the 36 for when i want to cook for just my family. I've actually never cooked on any other offset(the Lang is my first! ). It's well built and easy to run. Love the looks of the Yoders too. Shirley has a big following here, and look like fantastic smokers to me. If you don't have a offset already I'd definitely get one! Don't go the BGE route, there's just nothing like bbq cooked over a real wood fire!
And be sure to check your local Craigslist, you might be surprised. That's how I got my Lang, no shipping or tax!

I'd also recommend Humphrey's.

The best advice I can give you is to figure out your needs before you select a cooker and purchase.

I'm not sure what your after for a cooker but in that price range a kamado is a great cooker other than that I would go with a local build.
