I saw something on the Food Network where some people down south (Alabama, I think) make a white BBQ sauce. Has anyone here tried it and if so what are your opinions?

Authentic Alabama sauce is made with Mayo.

Did a search.

Interesting.

Bill is right as usual. The white sauces are uncommon and
all I have tried are for the mayo freaks. I made a short road
trip last Friday night to try Smokie Jacks in the small town of
Demopolis, AL. The place was on the Food Network not long
ago. The Q was very good, and he had a ton of trophies to prove
I wasn't the only one who thought so. He had a white sauce and well
as a very tasty redish/brown one. He doesn't sell the sauce seperately
as yet. I wasn't impressed with the white sauce, but I have yet
to find one that I personally liked.

If an Alabama man isn't crazy about it, I think I will pass.

Big Bob Gibson BBQ is famous for their white sauce. Chris Lily is the man. These folks have won shoulder in MIM 6 years in a row, and cooked at the James Beard House in NY a while back.
He will doing a cooking class in Seattle on Aug 21st.

That would be BIG BOB GIBSON BBQ
Decatur, ALABAMA.
Availiable on line
Sauces:
Alabama Red
Fiery Habanero Red
Tangy Origional White

Here's a recipe off the internet, never tried it.

White Barbecue Sauce
Source: Recipe by The Pennsylvania State Beekeepers Association

6 tablespoons mayonnaise
3 tablespoons honey
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon black pepper
2 tablespoons lemon juice
3 tablespoons white wine vinegar

Whisk ingredients together until smooth. Brush on chicken near the end of broiling, grilling or baking.

I'd keep parrothead far far away when making this. :D

I'd figure on Alabamianites for having a White Lightning BBQ Sauce......
the mayo based BBQ sauce seems, well, a little strange.

But then, I suppose BBQ mutton seems strange to you uninitiated ones.

I have a great Alabama white sauce.... love it on chicken, and taters too

I make it a few times a year - got the recipe from the Big Bob Gibson book by Chris Lily (which is a great book btw). It's mayo, horseradish, I think some vinegar and other stuff like cayenne and black pepper. It's not thick like mayo at all and there's not mayo type taste involved. Pretty dang popular around this house. I usually cook the chicken then dunk it in the sauce after it's done.

I tried the recipe out of Mike Mill's book, which is pretty much equal parts mayo and ACV with lemon juice, salt, black pepper and cayenne added. It is different, but really good on chicken. I love it on smoked chicken wings. It is kind of like a creamy italian dressing in a way. It is good on grilled fish as well.

My daughter bought me a bottle of this from a well known bbq joint in Chicago. Other sauces from there are great.

I just cant bring myself to open it.

one day

I got a bottle almost a decade ago. I remember not liking it, but my tastes have expanded since then. Im sure I wasnt using it right either.

Wouldnt mind trying it again but with a homemade recipe.

It's different, but very good. Try it out sometime. I like using the Pikes Place horseradish for this recipe. It works with salt and pepper chicken really well. Using rubs might mess with the flavor, but not sure (only used S&P with this sauce)

That really looks like a cole slaw dressing recipe. The white BBQ sauce thing doesn't make any sense to me.
