• xenforo has sucessfully updated our forum software last night. Howevr, that has returned many templates to stock formats which MAY be missing some previous functionality. It has also fixed some boroken templates Ive taken offline. Reat assured, we are working on getting our templates back to normal, but will take a few days. Im working top down, so best bet is to stick with the default templates as I work thru them.

I'm a little landlocked here in Indiana, I really got a craving for some grilled shrimp. The only kind I can find is the frozen pre cooked. Any suggestions on where to get good fresh shrimp for grilling. Or am I screwed. :icon_smil

Actually, your best bet for freshness would be shrimp flash-frozen on the boat same day they are harvested-raw of course.
I do not know your area, but a fish market or decent grocery should be able to order if they do not stock.

Frozen over fresh, because it is real hard to keep raw shrimp fresh on ice for more than a couple of days without a lot of quality loss.

Found some on the internet they ship it right form the dock and its flash frozen on the boat I'll try it.

I'm guessing you want wild and not farmed shrimp. You can order fresh (unfrozen) shrimp, but it's frightenly expensive. An alternative is to buy fresh frozen shrimp on line from TX. It will still run close to $100 - for 5 lbs of 21/25's shell-on shipped to your door. The price will vary a couple of $'s per Lbs if the shrimp are block frozen or broken-out into smaller size.

Sam's Club

or Costco. Or, drive south to Pensacola and go to Joe Patti's fish market. We had some there a few months ago that were taken off the boat and steamed. Mmmmmmmmm

When we were in Gulf Shores last year we got shrimp twice from Billy's. Very good quality and they ship.

Talk to your grocer...he should be able to get it, aand maybe even larger or smaller than you'd like...it 'taint that expensive (tho' not perch)...

Living in Mobile, AL does have its advantages!

I make it a habit of eating fresh shrimp at least twice a month!
There is a guy that is parked on the side of the road on my way home from work. Sounds funny but it is fresh and good!

Here is the place I always order crawfish from:

http://www.crawfishcoofcentralflainc.com

I know they also do shrimp but I have never gotten them from them. On the crawfish though, their prices are really reasonable and their service is great!

I hope it helps...

thankyou very much for this.... i lived in Lousianna last year and the missus has a big craving for a shrimp and crawfish boil but couldnt find any in Michigan of course....

thanks again

One of the guys on a fishing forum I frequent was driving to the coast and getting fresh shrimp from his buddy that has a shrimp boat. He would take pre orders and buy extra and set up on the side of the road and sell.

I ordered about 40 LBS twice from him and sold it at work. The guys here at work went nuts. They keep bugging me when I am gonna go do it again.

Sure was good! 10-12 to a pound...

here's a little secret... these are kroger's frozen raw tiger shrimp, 16-20 count. they are in the shell and deveined which makes the peeling easy. i get them when they are on sale, which is pretty frequently so you can't beat the price.

Here is a link to a list of Louisiana seafood suppliers: http://www.louisianaseafood.com/showsupplier.cfm?type=retail. I usually buy from Pelican Seafood out of Baton Rouge, but I don't know if they ship to Indiana. The suppliers that ship are marked, and just give them a call to see who has the best prices. The key is to buy a lot of the flash frozen 5lb bricks so that you can freeze some for future use. If you do place an order, try to get a bag of crawfish so that you can have a real cookout!

When you buy shrimp like this, you will be surprised at the difference in freshness and quality compared to what you would pick up locally. Next time I am coming that way, maybe I can bring some at a little cheaper price...

Rick,
We tried "fresh water shrimp" a couple of months ago.
BLAND to us, no twang or zip to them at all.
May I suggest you try a small sample before you stock the freezer?

i was really looking at the trout!

i'm happy with the kroger's shrimp actually, and when i need better, i have a wholesaler that sells retail also. i used to have two sources of these seafood distributors local, but one closed for some reason and i'm crushed because i got the tristan lobster tails from there!
