• xenforo has sucessfully updated our forum software last night. Howevr, that has returned many templates to stock formats which MAY be missing some previous functionality. It has also fixed some boroken templates Ive taken offline. Reat assured, we are working on getting our templates back to normal, but will take a few days. Im working top down, so best bet is to stick with the default templates as I work thru them.

So far I've been using Kingsford & wood chunks I buy at Home Depot or WalMart in my ECB and my Weber kettle. But I'm wondering if mabye I should start cutting back on the amount of Kingsford in the ECB and using more wood chunks instead....

And if I did that, maybe it would be cheaper to make the chunks myself instead of buying them in a big bag at Home Depot.

Anybody have any thoughts, or recommendations?

And for you Atlanta people, I'm just south of Lawrenceville in Grayson, if you happen to know of a good source or two for Q'ing wood.

Thanks guys for the help!

I too am interested in seeing that thread so I can see if anyone is servicing my area.

Jason, in this thread there is a link to a wood retailers list. Enter your state and click.

uhm. link no worky. must need negative-beer-mod.

Be careful Trout! One day we may be conversin' and such and the next I'll be at your doorstep with the chainsaw ready to play Paul Bunyan.

Jason, Check with some fruit farmers in your area. I know they grow peaches in Georgia. What about apples, cherries, pears. Those fruit farmers need to replace entire orchards every few years. The trees only produce at an optimum yield for so long then they bulldoze em down, burn em, and plant new trees. I'll be getting a load of apple and cherry in a couple of weeks from a farmer who downed a couple of orchards earlier this spring. I just need to get there with my chainsaw and trailer before he torches them.

Sorry guys, try the above link again, if it for some reason doesn't work for you the thread is called "wood shoppers guide" its currently about halfway down pg1 of the q-talk index.

Unfortunately not long on beer mod, short on sleep and been smelling brisket for 18 hours and not eating any mod  Both problems have been thoroughly corrected :D :D :D

Also keep an eye open for anywhere land is being cleared for new construction.

Jason,

Get to know the Friendly Power Equipiment Specialist at your local Home Depot. He's the guy that sells the chain saws. I'm a PES and every time I sell a chain saw I ask them what they are cutting up. If it's oak or hickory or some other kind of wood that I can use I offer to haul some of it off for free, all of it if it's not more than I can throw in my Jeep. I always have a supply of wood I can go pick up. I've got one pro customer that calls me every couple of weeks with a load I can pick up. I get so many referrals that I could could build a log cabin if I wanted to.

I live in Kennesaw and I get most of my wood from these guys:

Dane Tree Service

They are really nice folks, and they know what kind of wood most smokers like. Georgia has a lot of wild cherry wood, which is one of the better smoking woods out there. Ask em if they have any wild cherry sitting around, if not they will have tons of hickory.
I like red oak also, although some folks aren't partial to it.
