I've been collecting animal fat (beef, pork, poultry) from my klose smoker and I've been wondering what everyone dose with theirs? Especially here in Los Angeles. I've read that if you make sure it's hardened and put in a plastic bag you can throw it in the trash just like you would with bacon grease. I'm still having a hard time believing that So was just wondering what everyone else does. Sure like to clear this stuff out.

You have doubts and to whether or not you can put.....fat....in the trash in California? I regularly throw multiple pounds of rendered and undrendered fat into my trash every week and don't think twice about it, never would've expected it to be different anywhere else.

I would just think that the grease getting all over the inside of a trash truck could get really messy.
Do you seal it up in trash bags?

^^^ What he said. Just my .02. :thumb:

Yeah I mean I put it in bag, not just straight into my trash can, but that's only because that's where the rest of my trash goes :-P

Ever looked inside the back of a trash truck? A pound of grease would be the least of my worries :thumb:

Cut offs & etc go onto my bird feeders for the woodpeckers. I don't have enough rendered fat for it but you could make suet plugs from it.

I usually drain any grease into an empty dog food can, and then wad a paper towel to put in the top. Then it's dropped in the bin with the rest of the trash, and taken out when that bag is full. I feel as long as it's in a bag, it won't bother the waste guys too much.

I save all my empty coffee canisters to put used cooking oil/ grease in.Snap on the top and toss into the trash. That is,the extra, that I do not save to start fires with. The discarded canisters are contained in a garbage bag.

For large amounts, I'll pour it into a glass jar, seal it up, and throw it in the trash.

For smaller amounts, I use it to dampen newspaper, cardboard, or paper towels to make fire starters.

Depends. If it is drippings I freeze it and put a couple tablespoons in chili. Gives it the BEST smoky flavor. But to dispose I don't do anything special. It's organic and will break down quickly. If I were going to pit it in anything I'd maybe use a cereal box, something that will marginally contain it while letting the air hit it.

Hard, unrendered fat? Throw it in the trash or make suet. Since we get bird suet for maybe $.60 a chunk it's not worth bothering with.

Brisket drippings: save them to season new builds. Everything else: use as fire starters for brush piles on the farm. Sorry but these are probably not Cali solutions.

I shovel the ash from my Weber, PBC and Lang into the empty charcoal bags, then dump the grease from the Lang on top.

The ash soaks up the grease, and the bag is strong enough to hold it all. Roll up the top and the whole thing goes right in the trash. No mess.
