I have been buying my charcoal at Restaurant Depot assuming that I was getting the best price there. It's about $10 tax free per bag for briquettes or lump.

Am I getting a good deal? Is there somewhere else that has it for cheaper? I've been to super markets where pricing was about the same as RD and it got me thinking that maybe I could do better if I really scoured.

I'm on Long Island (just in case regional pricing varies)

How big are the bags?

40 lb bag of Royal Oak Briquettes is $18.49 at Do It Best. If I need Charcoal ASAP, I get Lazarri Hardwood Briquettes (yellow bag) $11.99 for 20 lbs

2-20lb bags Kingsford @ Sam's $14.00 - Best deal I've found.

Yeah Kingsford at sam's or wally world is probably the best cheap deal I can find. Bigabyte also did a review on the lump at Sam's which is 40lbs for 14 bucks I believe and he said its good stuff. So if you got 14 bucks you can get 40lbs of briquettes or lump at Sam's.

I've been using the Sam's Club lump. 40lbs for around $14. It's called Best of the West Lump Charcoal here in AZ. I think it works great but I just use it to make a bed of coals for the wood in my FAT 40.

Sams here in Milwaukee has Frontier, same weight and cost as your West Lump, just a different name.

I picked up some Frontier at the Ace Hardware here, and did not like it. Seemed to have a wierd smell while burning. But, maybe it's the fact that I don't smoke anymore and everything smells different...

I also just tried Frontier bought at Sam's and liked it. Chunk size varied greatly compared to Royal Oak, but it was decent over all.

Prices are based on "best deals" found lately

Frontier briquettes stink like chit, and i wouldn't use them to burn my ex-wife with. (ok maybe in her case i'd make an exception) .33/lb

Kingsford blue bag - i have given up on this stuff, they could give it away and i doubt i would use it - it has gone downhill over the past few years .35/lb

Frontier lump is Hecho En mexico and has good size chunks and burns nicely. I have not noticed any off-smells some have reported. .37/lb

RO is a crap shoot - sometimes good, sometimes bad. .46/lb

Stubbs briquettes are good stuff, and burn comparable to Kingsford Comp. (for less money) .53/lb

Kingsford Comp. .61/lb

Just getting into the realm of using more lump. Picked up a bag or RO at that one store that everyone hates but still shops at and a bag of Frontier Lump at Hardware Hank. The lump has kind of thrown me just based on the volume to weight ratio. After using briquettes for so long I was surprised by how light the big bags of lump are. But, I do know that weight has little to do with burn time.
