So, I didn't realize when you people are referring to using a weed burner to light up charcoal...you really were referring to an actual device. I thought it was perhaps some cute nickname someone came up with for a benzomatic or something.

So I always use my turkey fryer to light a chimney of charcaol. Other than burning out a chimney every year, works great. I guess what I'm wondering is am I missing something? Is this better for lighting charcoal somehow? Better at a competition for some reason? Better only for those guys with the sweet huge Spicewine that are just lighting the center of like a whole bag of charcoal on the grate or something?

Or is it just that some of you guys prefer lighting charcoal with a flamethrower because ... well, there's just not really a reason needed for that.

Well it will light off your charcoal in about 3-5 minutes in a kettle or my Stumps. If you turn it up to high, it will deplete the oxygen and go out. I will turn it up until it sounds like a small jet coming in to crash the neighbors house. More than once they have said something to me regarding the loud roar.

i have only used it on my drum so i dont have to worry about getting coals from my chimney into the drum. havent felt like i need it for grilling burgers etc

When firing up a load of coal for my WSM, I still use a chimeny starter... For the largish offsets, I use it not only to light the coal base, but also to burn off any left over gunk on the grates (then wire brush and re-oil) and to pre-heat the pit... Wouldn't be caught without my weed burner!

James.

it also melts snow and ice

everytime i use it, it brings great joy to all around... the kids especially.

it is the most fun you can have with propane!

I bought my weed-burner after first joining the Brethren. I LOVE IT! Nothin' better for getting lump ready for the firebox, cleanin' the gunk off the grates and scarin' the crap out of nosey little neighbor kids! Plus the thing sounds like a jet takin' off.

I recommend that you get out of the house right now and get you one (and an extra propane tank.)

I want one so farkin bad I can't stand it... I used them a ton as a kid burning weeds out of fence rows.

I know they have them at Harbor Freight and will go there soon (it's about 40 miles away). I went to Lowes and HD today looking for one but ended up getting another Weber chimney 'cause I need it tonight.

To quote an unnamed brother from Wyoming "Nothing impresses the neighbors like a weed burner in one hand and a bottle of liquor in the other".

I actually used it to burn some weeds and grass the other day! But it gets the most use in the drum!

Amen to that Brother! I love my weed burner for especially fast starts. If burning charcoal, I have pretty much resigned myself to using the little Weber firestarters. But they don't work very well with sticks, so the weed burner is great for that application. Here is a pic from last year...

is this something available at Lowes or Home Depot?? where can I pick one of these things up??

Rick!
You got a one pound bottle on that thing!

Man, I burn more gas than that playing with the thing after I light my fire.
Hook that baby up to a 5 gal. bottle and have some fun!!!!!!!!!

First time I showed one of my friend's kid he looked and me and said. "Mr. Bill, is that thing legal?"
No better response!!!!!!

I keep mine hooked up to a 20# bottle (Tim Allen mod). But I mostly use mine for starting slightly large (30' X 30') brush piles.

Used mine long before I got my Spicewine. Keep it hooked up all the time and it sits outside year round next to my smokers and grills. Harbor freight seem to be the cheapest place to get one. If you do, spend the extra bucks and get the one with the igniter, just less awkward to light up.

It helps get things going a lot faster and there is no paper ash or embers blowing all over the place. Just plan more fun than watching a chimney.

Sometimes, if your at a competition and are up in the wee hours of the morning close your eyes and you will think you are at a military air base with jets coming in and taking off.
