• xenforo has sucessfully updated our forum software last night. Howevr, that has returned many templates to stock formats which MAY be missing some previous functionality. It has also fixed some boroken templates Ive taken offline. Reat assured, we are working on getting our templates back to normal, but will take a few days. Im working top down, so best bet is to stick with the default templates as I work thru them.

So, I saw the vortex and figured I could make one of my own. I did, testing it right now with some wings on the 18.5 kettle. I was able to fit 30 drummettes on the kettle and that alone is reason enough to have a vortex/clone. Steady holding at 300 degrees with lump coal. I don't know if the dimensions of what I made are even close to the vortex but I made what made sense for the 18.5. I'll try to post some pron if the come out OK.

You're gonna love it! I got one last week and cooked wings for the neighbors Sun, big hit, crispy skin, great taste, did about 400 for an hour.

Here are a few pics. Not the best pics but, damn, very happy with the outcome.

Sorry it's upside down.

Cooked at about 300 (therm on kettle lid) for about an hour. Came out crispy and juicy. Did garlic parm and Franks. Wife says we aren't buying wings out anymore.

More details pics of the Vortex please - Wings look great!

We have not done much with it yet, but so far its definitely a worthwhile accessory for a kettle. Easily worth the money if you want great wings, not complicated.

Also does a nice job roasting oysters...

No pics of the wings during the cook, but here's a plate:

I made the vortex clone from 22 gauge steel. I figured the large end to be 10 inches and the small end to be 6 inches. It ended up a little smaller because I loaned my buddy my mig machine to make some emergency repairs on some equipment and I had to rivet it. I'll add some pics soon.

We carry the Vortex's made out of stainless steel in 4 different sizes to fit many different sizes of kettle or kamado grills. For more info and a video that goes over the 4 different methods of cooking a Vortex provides, check them out at Owens BBQ a BBQ Brethren forum sponsor - www.owensbbq.com/vortex.html

What's the general consensus on which one to use in the 22" kettle? The website shows either the small or medium will work, but I figure the medium would probably be best. What do you guys think?

Medium is the most popular but both the small and the medium Vortex will work great in the 22.5” Weber kettle….that is the one kettle size that both units are really great in. Really it depends on what cooking style/s you are wanting to use the most.

Indirect/Direct cooking – for instance like chicken wings for example the small Vortex would give you more grill space and you can fit more food.

Low & Slow – for instance cooking a pork butt a medium Vortex would give you a larger indirect space for bigger butts. And the small Vortex would get you longer time because you have more room for charcoal.

Direct High Heat – for searing steaks the medium Vortex will give you more searing room.

Infrared Heat – for cooking a beer can chicken the medium Vortex will give you room for a larger bird, even a small turkey (I put a 8 pound turkey in the medium).

I bought the medium and it works perfectly in my 22.5" kettle.
