• xenforo has sucessfully updated our forum software last night. Howevr, that has returned many templates to stock formats which MAY be missing some previous functionality. It has also fixed some boroken templates Ive taken offline. Reat assured, we are working on getting our templates back to normal, but will take a few days. Im working top down, so best bet is to stick with the default templates as I work thru them.

I am thinking about adding another barrel to the arsenal. My question is…..

I am going to use a 2 inch nipple and elbow for the exhaust, would making the exhaust a U shape and extending in say a foot below the lid on the outside have any kind of effect?

the heat don't leave the smoker as fast so it should get hotter I would think and in some cases use less feul that has been my experience.

Why not make a U shape exhaust and pipe it right back into the smoker?

Then it would be a PDS (perpetual drum smoker)

Okay, never mind

i was wondering if i would get a more smoky flavor. i really like the uds but things just don't seem to be as smoky as when using my offset.

i am also thinking about building a stand for a water pan. has anyone used a pan?

You gotta be kidding me! More smokey flavor? In a drum! Are you using any wood for smoke? None of my cookers produce as flavorful meats as the UDS. A water pan would defeat the purpose of the fats dripping on the coals and the convection produced. But hey, give it a try and let us know how it works for you!

It should have a similar effect as extending the exhast into the drum by the same distance.

An upside down "U"...? Doesn't seem to me that it'd draft well, or if it'd even stay lit (thinking it might act as more of an exhaust cap).

I'm thinkin' that old, stale smoke would continue to accumulate until enough was built up to push it in the direction it really doesn't want to go (down)...creating too smoky of an environment in the top 1 foot of the barrel.

'Course I could be always be thinkin' wrong, you can call home and ask my wife.

Have you tried lump and/or the size and type of your wood chunks in your current UDS, or constraining the exhaust? You could always just mock it up for a cook or two and see how it works...

It would keep the birds from $hitting down it.

I just did a quick mock up and test with a piece of tubing I had here and the "U" pretty much kills the draft. Maybe restricting the outlet some (some sort of valve on the chimney) will keep more smoke in or maybe more wood to charcoal in the firebox will do it for you
