Any ideas on what I can use for a firebox in my UDS's I have exhaused every possable option to find more expanded metal to build the last two remaining UDS's for our comp next week. Nothing in my area! none at home depot or the 6 other local hardware stores, none at any of the local metal shops none at the local car repair shop I'm in big trouble if I cant find it or come up with another way to hold the charcoal
HELP!

:pray::pray::pray::pray::pray:

can homedepot order them and ship them next day? Check any local heavy equipment shops. I work for Cat in VA and we have a crap ton of it on hand

nope I even brought a picture in and they have no idea.. Welcome to NH where reality is a fantasy. :doh:

Do you have a scrap metal yard around there? I was able to get a piece for next to nothing - also try metal fabrication shops.

I agree with Regionalceleb- check tractor shops with service departments- I'm with a New Holland dealer, and we fab metal all the time- might even be able to sweet talk 'em into making something completely unique for ya!

I'm using closetmaid metal shelving I had laying around the house. Trim it to 10" and wrap the left-over wire around the charcoal grate and then burn the hell out of it until the paint comes off.

I wonder if you had to, maybe you could just lay a few bricks in the bottom and put a charcoal grate on them then stack a few bricks around the perimeter just to hold the coals together till ya find some steel. Just a thought.

I have a old metal milk crate in one of my drums... but that was a lot harder to find then expanded I think
if you really need lemme know I can get some and ship it to ya... your cost of course :-D

I know you are in the Mountains of NH, but I picked up some heavy expando and some 14 ga. steel at this place in Lowell MA. Lowell Iron and Steel, 978-458-8476. They cut to size while I was there and charged only $30 for 26" x 31" of each. So are there any welding shops out there on Fantasy island? Or call those guys. With all the Harley dudes in Milford there has GOT to be someone doing welding around there. Push come to shove, I've got a drum fire box that will be idle and you could use it for your comp. I'm way East of you in N.Andover, MA. Just a thought. Are you going to Rockin" Ribs in Merrimack?

I made mine from an old propane tank. I drilled a boatload of 7/8" holes, cut the top off, and dropped a small round Weber grate in it. Works great, but is heavy and was time consuming to make.

metal egg crate from grocery store might work...look around back of store.
Or sometimes shopping carts have a small basket on the bottom you could maybe cut off if you could find an old shopping cart.
