I tried out some plowboys yardbird on some pork ribs.
Everyone said it was good, my son said he liked my rub better. I went light on the ribs with the rib. My take on yardbird it had a good flavor, but it had a little to salty. It didn't have any kick to it, i like a little more spicy heat (hot pepper) on the tail end. For a store bought rub it wasn't bad just a tad to much salt . I like making my on rubs, but if i was in a hurry i would buy it use it again. I would give it a score from 1 - 10 would be a 7.
The ribs was good enuff there was no left overs to eat tomorrow.

That was my first impression as well. Put it on ribs like a normal rub and thought it was was too salty. Then learned how to best use it and now buy it 5lbs at a time. Ribs and chicken, apply it like you would a salt shaker. Pork butt- you can't pack it on heavy enough. For a real treat, season some pork chops up for the grill

Well as long as the ribs were good that's all that matters.

I tried the rub a few years ago and you gave it a better score than I would have. Family and friends also found it to be too salty for our tastes and found it to lack flavor. I have never used it since, but it may also be dependent upon how you apply your rub. I like to dredge the meat in the rub so I have a nice coating.

Many people rave about it so it can't be that bad. But then again we all have different taste preferences...

Cayenne pepper would help it. Wife said it had a mild flavor. True we all do have different taste. That's kind of the fun part for me. Always looking for better flavor, my wife is not much help on the bbq flavor, she likes everything i bbq. I'm never satisfied with the end result, could always be better. Lol

Funny that this just came up. I just tried it for the first time last Sunday as well. I cooked a spatch'd chicken and was slightly disappointed. It was not bad but not what my expectations were.
I did think it would be better on pork but have not tried that yet. I tend to blend most rubs with other spices or rubs anyway so I just need to figure out where this one fits in my line up. Knowing that others also found it missing expectations, I will follow up when I find how this rub works for me down the road after some tweaking a bit.

I like it used sparingly and paired with the right glaze to get a good flavor.

Love yardbird. We put the stuff on everything! Pork chops are great with a little sprinkle of yardbird.

It is a bit salty but it was developed as a competition rub and doesn't have alot of kick. I agree, add some cayenne or black pepper if you want it to have some kick.

Coat a butt with it next time and that'll change your mind:grin:

I like it but I wouldn't use it on Ribs or Pork Butts for that matter, I like to use it on Chicken, Pork Loins, Pork steaks and Pork Chops. I don't go crazy with it, I use it like I would salt and pepper. If I want a little more kick I'll mix in some Tony's C., Slap Yo Momma or cayenne pepper.

First time I used Plowboy's Yardbird I also S&P'ed the ribs. Big mistake - way too salty. Now I use it sparingly by itself on pork. One of these days I'll get around to trying it on chicken.

If you'd put a bunch of brown sugar on those ribs after the yardbird, you might have had a better experience.

I am not a fan of Yardbird on pork, but do like it on, well, Yardbird!

I've been using Yardbird for a little over 8 years. We love the flavor but you have to be careful on ribs or chicken because of the high salt content. I think the rub shines best on a big 10 pound butt.
