Well, it looks like I am gonna be the new owner of a Weber Performer Stainless model that I scored on Craigslist for $95.

Now, I need go pick it up and have questions about getting it into my Subaru Outback Legacy.

First, would there be any problem with transporting it on its side? According to the measurements I find online, it looks like it will fit in that way with the rear seats folded down.

If it would be a problem, does it come apart in any practical way? I see two bolts where the kettle attaches to the frame?

I would think that I should take off the LP gas tank and pack it in separately?

Any help or thoughts on this will be appreciated.

EDIT: Oops, it is a Weber Performer Stainless -- the older model, not a "Silver" as stated in the title

I just called Weber support. Great service as usual. She (Sandy I believe she said) really got into it, and even asked me "How much did you pay for it?" LOL I told her $95 and she said " Wow, that is really good - they sold for $400."

She gave me all her suggestions for transporting it. Being on its side is no problem. Remove the charcoal bin, tape the door shut, make sure the hex nuts holding the lid holder are tight, and remove the LP gas cylinder. Also the more obvious hints such as bring a plastic trash bag to put the grills in and make sure all the charcoal and ashes are outta there.

She said if worse comes to worse about fitting it, it can be disasembled.

All in all, a nice experience.

Congrats on the Performer score Jim! I was able to cram one into a Honda CRV! What color did you get?

Brian

In additon to the plastic bags you may want to bring a small tarp to protect the Subaru.
I think it's a good idea to over plan this type of stuff instead of having to go back a scrub stains out.

Good luck with your new toy. Don't for get to post pics when you get back.

Guido, thanks for the tarp suggestion -- I was thinking a blanket, but a plastic tarp will be much better and I have one in the garage.

Brian, I think this sucker is blue -- hard to tell for sure from the picture and I didn't ask. I was more interested in the "very good condition" part  IF you got one into a Honda CRX, I am gonna be ok with the Outback.

Here is the listing
http://boston.craigslist.org/nos/for/348694063.html

It is located fairly near the Rock 'n Ribfest in Merrimack so I intend to pick it up that weekend while I am down there checking out the comp and meeting the brothers/sisters.

Sweet score, look forward to some pics. Good luck with the pick up.

Nice find....I keep looking in CL and cant find any good deals locally.

Aren't blue ones more accurate than black?

I think so. I think the blue paint retains heat better due to some chemical property that is way above my head. I'm too lazy to search, but I think there's a thread about it somewhere.
