• xenforo has sucessfully updated our forum software last night. Howevr, that has returned many templates to stock formats which MAY be missing some previous functionality. It has also fixed some boroken templates Ive taken offline. Reat assured, we are working on getting our templates back to normal, but will take a few days. Im working top down, so best bet is to stick with the default templates as I work thru them.

Hey Guys - I went ahead and ordered my cabinet today, what are the best thermometers that you guys use an prefer?
I'll take all the advice cooking thermometers, probes, instant thermometers etc etc

Congrats on the new cooker order. What did you go with? I really like thermoworks products but there's so many on the market now that are good. Depends how you plan on using it. Lots of folks use the maverick with no issues.

What kind of thermometer?

For one built into the cabinet, Teltru.

For an instant read, Thermoworks Themapen

For a remote thermometer that can monitor pit and meat temp, Maverick or iGrill2

Sorry, I don't have a lot of advice, but a couple years ago after buying and tossing cheap thermometers I broke down and spent the money on a ThermoWorks Thermapen and like I said, it's been over 2 years now and is the only thermometer I own. Just yesterday, after not have an oven-type probe thermometer, I ordered from them their ChefAlarm thermometer for $49. I'm sure I'll be getting a quality product I won't have to replace in a few months.

Can't go wrong with anything Thermoworks makes. I use camo Thermapen, Chef Alarm, ThermoPOP and DOT. Stopped using everything else.

Some of the therms that folks have suggested are good, but very expensive. I would like to recommend some alternates. Maverick for the grate and meat. River Country for the CC. Thermowand for an instant probe.

These are just as good as the ones suggested above, but at a fraction of the cost. They are not junk. They will last and give good service. Good luck, Joe

Sam's Club has the iGrill2 with 4 probes for $79. Usually $99 with only 2 probes. I like mine.

Analog for a cooker then River Country best value

Instant read then thermapen or best value [ame="http://www.amazon.com/Lavatools-PX1-Javelin-Thermometer-Chipotle/dp/B00NMQGAT4/ref=sr_1_16?ie=UTF8&qid=1452040851&sr=8-16&keywords=instant+read+thermometer"]Amazon.com: Lavatools PX1 Javelin PRO Thermometer, Chipotle: Kitchen & Dining@@AMEPARAM@@http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41RyYTAPNoL.@@AMEPARAM@@41RyYTAPNoL[/ame]

Remote then Maverick

I've have been very happy with this instant read thermometer. It's fast, accurate and inexpensive.[ame="http://www.amazon.com/Lavatools-Digital-Food-Thermometer-Chipotle/dp/B00GRFHXVQ"]Amazon.com: Lavatools Digital Food Thermometer, Chipotle: Instant Read Thermometers: Kitchen & Dining@@AMEPARAM@@http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/415rlxPvcZL.@@AMEPARAM@@415rlxPvcZL[/ame]

A BBQ Guru CyberQ and a Thermapen is what I use mostly, I've also got a Maverick ET-7 for my kettle.

Nothing but happy with my river country dial therm. Better value than a tel-tru.

Thermapen is awesome but for a home cook its more a status symbol. Yes i got mine :becky:

For instant read, if you don't want to spend the extra money on a Thermapen, the Thermopop is an excellent option and quite a bit cheaper.

Love my thermapen. Actually dropped it into a hot fire in the egg and melted part of it. Still works like a champ

Tel-Tru

And thermapen, but just the yellow color one. The other colors are much much slower.

I've just had cheapo in-the-side-of-the-smoker dial thermometers like Charbroil -- I would test them at freezing (stir probe end in a glass of water with lots of ice) or boiling (stir probe end in a pot of water on the stove) and use the difference of what it registered vs what it should register to add or subtract to get the true temperature. I didn't test the thermometer that came with my kamado, I think I should just for the heck of it.

I had the base model Maverick digital thermometer with the plug in probe on a wire leash. The wire leash broke circuit before I used it more than a dozen times. Found out that kind of break is a common problem so I decided I didn't need that type of thermometer.

When I had the COS a lightning fast probe thermometer was necessary because I had trouble retaining heat and had to close the door quickly. Luckily before I bought an expensive thermopen, etc., I got the kamado. Now an expensive lightning fast thermometer isn't necessary, once it gets going my kamado barely notices if I leave the lid up for 15 seconds to get a couple of temperature reads with my $25 Weber digital probe. Have had it for 2 or 3 years, still works like a charm. I've tested it with ice water and boiling water and it's accurate. Even though I sometimes forget to turn it off for days at a time still haven't needed to replace the battery. I haven't abused it heavily but I've dropped it plenty, drenched it, steamed it, cooked it a little a few times and it works as well as always. A perfect match for me and what I do.

I just checked it on Amazon.com, it's sells there for less than half what I paid. :tsk: Mine is black and round, maybe I have an older model or a Canadian model or something.

all my cookers have river country thermometers on them and I have had no problems at all with them. I would like to find something different but my maverick is 3 years old and under fairly heavy use has never let me down. I have a thermapen and had a thermapop but gave it to a friend both work great but for the money I would go with the thermapop.

I have both the thermopen ($87) the pocket thermo ($17). Had to send in the thermopen to get fixed; pocket thermo is just as good and a hellava lot cheaper.
