i know the kc royal is the big daddy, but what do you consider #'s 2 & 3 ?

i'm personally thinking for me- memphis in may & the houston livestock show & rodeo.

I'm not going to argue with Zilla. Certainly the Jack and Royal are up there. I've only heard great things about the HLSR, so it sounds as if it's at the top of the food chain.

Answers are definately going to be effected by what BBQ association a person is involved in.

As a KCBS member, I'd say:
Jack
Royal Open
Royal Invitational

Someone that is involved with MIM would consider Memphis in May as king - as they should.

I forget the Texas BBQ association, but I'd expect them to list Houston Livestock and Rodeo.

From the inside, meaning as a cook that concentrates on KCBS events . . . .well, I started to answer, but I can't. My answer would include the American Royal. The Royal just does not get the respect the three contests listed above get. I'm not a fan of the whole Jack Daniel's draw and celebrity judging, but I get as wound up about getting there as anybody, so it would be included. Beyond that, I guess the Great American BBQ Festival, but it's just too new to have the prestige of the others. I give it. This is too hard.

I'm real surprised that nobody so far has mentioned Shannon IL. A call there is really a quality call against a field filled with champions every year. Good judges, well run and when teams come from Florida to Mass to Washington to Texas to Oklahoma to Cal and everywhere inbetween you know that you're measured against the best.

So for resume building sure the Jack will always be #1 because it's the hardest to get into. Royal Invitational is #2. And to me Shannon is #3 and it's the only "open" contest on that list.

The Pig Jig in GA is pretty notorious. Same with Memphis in May. The Reno ribfest is decent sized and has rep'. The national pork cookoff in DC in June is held on the Mall in DC. Douglas Best of the Best ain't too shabby, either.

Lot's of large, famous contests around.

thanx everyone. i am all about the pig. not to sound cocky but i'll put my ribs up against anyone in the world as far as taste,texture,& color. i've done over 5000 briskets so thats just an option. i'm really about making $$$ but a couple comps just for me to see where i stand & what people want.....which is prolly all the wrong criteria for judging"judging" or customer judging....my main philosiphy is fill yer belly & serve a great meal (i'm not so silly as to try to sell ya the best ya ever had)for say... $7.00

I was doing some numbers crunching recently and the 06 Shannon contests was the most competitive event over the last 2 years based on who was there and got called. 07 wasnt far behind. Certainly getting a call in Shannon is something special.

The answer depends on what your definition of “is” is. If you are asking which is the best known among the masses, the answer is MIM. This is because over the years they have done a much better job of promoting themselves to the national media. If you are asking which is the biggest, then the AR or the Rodeo is the answer because I’m not sure which is bigger. If you are asking which is the most prestigious, then the Jack is most likely the answer at least among most competitors.
