My new Spicewine was going to be ready around August 20th or so and I was, to put it mildly excited. Little did I know on the 8th of August what an adventure this would become. My Excursion got rear-ended on the 9th to start things off with a bang:evil:. I’d already made arrangements to drive out on the 22nd and meet ZBQ in Hermann Missouri to take the KCBC judge’s class, then on to Jay’s in Columbia to pick up The Beast, returning through Versailles Kentucky stopping for Brother Ray Lampe’s (Dr. BBQ’s) tailgate class at the Woodford Reserve Distillery. A planned leisurely drive turned into a rolling cat fight with the insurance company & body shop to insure that the X would be ready to go.
As it turned out, the bodyshop getting the X finished Wednesday afternoon and a faulty roll of laminate for the smoker graphics delayed my departure until 8pm Wednesday night. With the judging class starting at 6pm on Thursday I had some road work to do!. Power drive time!. I drove most of the night stopping briefly in Dayton OH for a quick 4 hour nap before continuing on the Hermann. I made it to Hermann with about 40 minutes to spare.
Bunny and Rich Tuttle taught the class and it was a real eye-opener to say the least (but that’s another post). Met 3 other brethren at the class - ZBQ, Nthole and Jbrink, and a good time was had by all. I’ve already decided that Hermann rates a return trip when I can bring the wife and spend more time there. After the class and on to Columbia!
Got to Spicewine Friday morning (after stopping and picking up the requisite flowers for Terri) and met Terri and most of the crew – I just missed Jay and Steve as they were heading out to the comp at Harrisonville.
They really pulled out all the stops on my tandem it was all pimped out including the fuzzy dice!
With Terri’s help I started applying the graphics to both smokers while waiting for Neil (ZBQ) to arrive. Neil and his lovely wife arrived; we finished up all the graphics, hooked up and headed for Kentucky.
The adventure continued with monsoon like rainstorms; heavy traffic; road construction and tornado funnels turning a 6 hour drive into a 12 hour one. All ended well and Saturday was spent at the Woodford distillery sampling product (not too much) and sitting through Dr.BBQ’s class.
Neil fired up his Spicer to help out the class and instantly drew a crowd.
This phenomenon of crowd gathering was to be repeated every time I stopped. I should have had Spicewine business cards and asked for a commission!
At Woodford, Neil and I parted company – Neil, it was great meeting and traveling with you – If you ever need a pit slave, give me a call - and I headed off back toward Virginia. More incredible monsoons, more traffic but finally home!
Jay, Steve, Terri and all the Spicewine crew couldn’t have been nicer. I’m very happy with the cooker and can’t wait to fire it up in the next couple of days.

A BIG thanks to Neil and Heather, and all the Spicewine crew for a great adventure and really cool smoker!
