Well, I figured I've been poking around here long enough. Time to do a Bio.

My name is Neil but everyone calls me "bigmista" or just "mista". Except of course for my girl who call me "Bigdaddy" and rightly so! :D

I was born in L.A., raised in Galveston, TX, and now I am back in L.A. (my father lives here.) I've eaten a lot of "Q" in my life but I think the best I ever had came from a little place in Galveston called "Mama's" who only sold BBQ after 5 on a friday night and was usually sold out by 7. I ate there for years as a kid before I found out that Mama's was actually a brothel. Of course that made the Q even better!

My father got my into cooking when I moved back to L.A. (mainly because I saw how many women flocked to him when he had a dinner party). We grilled a lot in the backyard on a kettle but I never really learned about smoking.

I actually got the bug to start smoking last year when I saw Alton Brown's show Good Eats on the food network. He smoked a pork butt inside 2 ceramic flower pots. You can see the details here... http://www.rollerfeet.com/backporchbeer/archives/000256.asp

Once I saw that I had to learn all I could about BBQ. I searched everywhere on the internet and eventually ended up in a couple of Yahoo groups.

I bought my first smoker a few months ago. I got a Chargriller Super Pro at Lowe's. Here is a pic of it...

My girl is almost sure that I am cheating on her because I spend so much time with it. She'd probably fuss about it if I didn't make some good BBQ like the meat in my avatar!

Well my fingers are cramping up now so you wake up and quit pretending that you are reading all of this. I'm glad to be here and look forward to making a lot of new friends.

Thanx to willkat for inviting me!

I'm looking forward to it! This will be my first time going to a contest. I want to see what it is really all about.

I really like it here and I will definitely be around! Perhaps some of the brethren will stop by my site sometimes. I have a food news section there that is pretty interesting.

Thanks again for inviting me.

I actually just started Atkins so more meat for me! You know I went to college just down the road from you at Southwest Texas State in San Marcos. I played on the Nat'l Championship football team. That ring is still the only jewelry I wear.

My girl and I are actually considering moving to Austin in the futre. Perhaps you could guide me to some good info online...

Thanx for the welcome Hor-Hay!

That would mean you played for Coach Wacker? Sorry to hear of his passing. He was one of a kind! Feel free to send me a PM with any specific Austin info you need or want and I'll see what I can come up with. Citysearch.com is a good starting place to get a general feel for what's going on. Auschron.com gives a little more flavor and political spin. Coming from L.A. cost of living shouldn't be a shock and will probably be a nice change I'm guessing, but Austin is probably one of the more expensive cities in the state.

I actually did play for Coach Wacker. He was a great man. Most people don't know but he was a doctor of Psychology. That was probably how he managed to keep us motivated to go 14-0! It was amazing to watchhim be the sweetest guy you ever want to meet during the week and watch him lose his mind during the game and fire all of the coaches every week!

I really do miss him.

The weather here in Cali is awesome but it is just so expensive here. I'm sure we would have a much better lifestyle in Austin. My girl would be right at home because she likes Country music. I'll check out the sites you mentioned and get back toyou with any questions.

Thanks!

Bigmista, Hard to find a more helpful or nicer bunch than there is around here. Glad to have you with us, say hey to Big Mo, Mook & Horn and wish them luck for us.
BTW who's your pro football team?

GO CHIEFS

Mista,

Welcome!

I also hail from Austin. I am an appraiser there, so I have an MLS membership and can get you any housing data you want, when you are ready to start looking. I'd be happy to help a brother out.

So Sorry...

Thanks Auscos!

Probably won't be for a year or so but we are keeping our eyes open. Also gonna look around Houston since my Mom lives in Galveston.

Welcome

Wife and I love the signature - you should send it to PETA.

I have benn trying to get employed in Austin for over 30 years - you need special skills cause they can pick and choose. Also Austin has gone pretty much Commie/Liberal (excluding Bretheren). And, the cost of living has jumped up to way more than Houston

Gone commie /liberal?

I think you are very mistaken. Austin used to be very liberal, but has gradually gotten more and more conservative ever since W was guv. Its still the most liberal city in Texas, but nothing like it used to be.

And btw, all brethern are not conservative.

Austn was a beautiful city last time I was there. I had a friend that lived in the University Heights or Hills area ( I forget which.) Houston is on our list also. Possibly around the Sugarland area.

Any info you'd care to share on that area?
