So I was cleaning up my "Hoarder" room, the one room I use to just dump things I don't want to toss but don't know where to put, when I came across a package from Texas BBQ Rubs. Inside were two 2 pound sealed bags of beef rub and a 1 pound sealed bag of chicken rub. I checked the date on the package and noticed that it had been over a year since I received the package. Nowhere on the bags could I find a best by date or expiration date.

My concern is what is the shelf life of this rub. I tried to contact Texas BBQ Rubs via their web site's "contact us" page, but it gave me an error when I pressed the send button. I can't find any other way to email these guys.

So, does anyone know the shelf life of rub from Texas BBQ Rubs?

Thanks.

I've got a 40-50 bottle collection of rubs. None say "expire". Those that have anything say"best if used by" and some of those dates go out to 2019. Bluedawg had a post about herbs and spices if not properly cared for will degrade faster than salt or sugar. So if you go a couple years out your rub may be sweeter or saltier.

I don't think they go "bad", but flavors may change. The change may be a good, or a bad thing. I say use em. I highly doubt that there would be any health risks, from using them. However, I could be way off base. If I am, I hope someone corrects me.

Just made up some bbq sauce from a jar of cookshack mix that I know is 14yr old, tastes great

Only thing I would check is for mold or anything crawling around. If not smoke on.

The shelf life for spices is roughly 6-12 mos. Do not become toxic but are just not as potent. I have stopped buying large volume packages except for salt (which doesn't go bad unless one counts the biblical rhetorical question)

As indicated above, the rubs don't go bad but they so lose some potency.

Don't hesitate to use them, just apply a heavy liberal coating, the worst that could happen is great tasting food would be the final result.

After opening the vacuum sealed bag I keep the unused portion in a Tupperware container and I have never noticed any loss of flavor and I have been using it for a long time. I certainly wouldn't be hesitant about using it.

For those interested, I got a response from Bill. He said that as long as the bags were unopened and stored out of the sunlight, they should be fine even after 1 or 2 years. So, looks like I have plenty of spices for the next cook.
