Hey guys and gals,

Brother will be celebrating his birthday and wants recommendations for good BBQ restaurants or restaurants in general.

Thanks in advance!

I'm not able to help you Sako but one thing I know for sure...he's not going to find anything that holds a candle to the food you cook. :thumb:

The REAL Q joints in Memphis are in shady neighborhoods,go daylight hours and only in a group( InterstateBBQ,COZY CORNER,,3 Little pigs,Bbq shop) The tourist traps are better left unvisited.(Corky's,Rendezvous,Central BBQ) Memphis is a hotbed of social unrest at this time.Be safe.

Puckett's (there are a couple I think - I've been to the one in Franklin) isn't strictly a BBQ spot, but the ribs and pulled pork are really good there. It has all around great Southern food - breakfast is fantastic - by all means order the country ham. I haven't been to Martin's or Peg Leg Porkers, but they are supposed to be good from what I've heard.

Lol thanks Jeanie! Maybe he misses my Bbq ever since he moved to New Orleans :biggrin1: but I'm sure all the other amazing placing to eat there more than make up for it.

Thank u Hoss! Ya he's definitely not interested in the tourist traps. I'll pass the info to him.

Puckett's in Franklin is a very cool spot. We really enjoyed that one. The pharmacy in Nashville is very good as well. There's also Loveless Cafe right outside of Nashville going to Memphis. Very good southern food and above average bbq.

As for Memphis, my favorite bbq place is One & Only BBQ. I go to the one off Kirby (the original I think). I agree about Corky's,Rendezvous,Central BBQ. There are better ones around for sure.

Don't come to Memphis and not eat at Gus's Famous Fried Chicken! Best place in town by far. Gibson's donuts are great too early in the morning. Best donuts I've ever had.:decision:

Another fan of Puckett's in Franklin. Great food, atmosphere, service and live music.

Hattie B's in Nashville is great hot chicken.

Only BBQ that I've had recently in Memphis is Germantown Commissary (site is http://www.commissarybbq.com/ ) and Central BBQ ( http://cbqmemphis.com/ ). Would recommend Commissary over Central.

Roger that! I've been there a couple times & they just opened one here in L.A. and it is fanfarkingtastic. Went there about a week and a half ago and will be returning very, very soon!

btw there's place that makes and sells pies next to Puckett's in Franklin - great stuff!

None of those are really in shady neighborhoods. Payne's, which is in a rougher area, is the best sandwich in town, IMO.

The "to Memphis" part just registered - between Nashville and Memphis is a whole hog joint that is very, very, VERY high on my bucket list - check this out:

As you can see in the video, these people are serious about whole hog BBQ.
I live in Jackson, Tn. and have been to just about all of the places in the video. Scott's is pretty good. Sometimes great, and sometimes just a meal. I agree with the poster that said you won't find any better than what you fix at home. Several of the whole hog places are great if you get there when they pull it off of the pit, but they seem to have trouble holding it and preserving the taste and quality.
Exit 87 BBq is on I-40 at exit 87. They open at like 4a.m. Good place to grab a breakfast sandwich if you are passing thru. The bbq bologna and egg sandwich is good as is the sausage and egg. While you are there, they have bottles of Humphrey's sauce for sale. Some good West Tn. style sauce. The bbq is usually pretty good early in the day when its fresh.

Man,

Thanks guys! Obviously you can keep it coming as the trip won't be until September.

The original Gus's is in Mason, Tn. just outside of Memphis. I think we turned at exit 35 but I can't remember. We did a construction job in Mason around 1999. Gus was still alive and cooking in the old building then. It was some fine food. We ate there 2 or 3 days a week. I know the old place burned and pretty sure that Gus has passed on. Not sure how the food is now. maybe somebody else will chime in.

Hoss and I disagree on a couple of the joints. I call Neely's Interstate BBQ a tourist trap and Central BBQ on Central real Q. Central is the only one of the 2 that competes. I don't like the looks of either neighborhood so daytime.

Been over ten years since have been to Scott's (before it changed ownership) but it was really good. Was told to ask for "middlin'" meat.

Another place we liked was Jack Creek BBQ (my nephew's in-laws used to live in Chester County. Here's some info from them. http://www.southernfoodways.org/interview/joyners-jacks-creek-bar-b-q-2003/

Will have to check this one out on our annual TN trip. My nephew Glenn (GatorDawg here) lives in Jackson.

West TN is a good place for local hog lovers! Below are a few of my favs!
Jack's Creek
Pig House in Jackson
Latham's -- good meat but sometimes pulled is dry to me!
Cajun Cookers
Exit 87 - tried today! Ribs were average, sides average, but their pulled pork was moist and good! Their mild sauce is good as well!
Ramsey's BBQ in Parsons is good as well! Similar to Jacks Creek

Average places here to me are Reggi's and McKenzie's.

Lots of huts and small places in the area are pretty good sometimes as well!

Hope these help for the Jackson area! I agree with all the sentiments about the Memphis places

It's hard to beat a backyard though!
