• xenforo has sucessfully updated our forum software last night. Howevr, that has returned many templates to stock formats which MAY be missing some previous functionality. It has also fixed some boroken templates Ive taken offline. Reat assured, we are working on getting our templates back to normal, but will take a few days. Im working top down, so best bet is to stick with the default templates as I work thru them.

Tandoor smoker

You put that much concrete in a 55 gallon drum and you might kill someone/thing if it fell over.

Unless my calculations are way off, that thing weighs at least 250 pounds.

Ok, re-doing my math.

Formula for volume of a cylinder pi * r squared * height
55 gal. drum, approx 22" diameter, 33 inches high.

3.14 * 122 * 33 = approx 12650 cu inches
less the hole
3.14 * 25 * 33 = approx 2600cu inches

Net 10,050 cu inches of concrete divide by 1728 to get cu feet = approx 6 cu feet of concrete.

Depending on the mix design, concrete weighs approx 148 lbs/cu ft

So that equals approx 1,000 lbs and I did not count the weight of the floor.

So this tells me......I need to find a job.

Wait til the weather improves? Wuss.

I wouldn't go through the trouble of insulating it if I was going to wait til it was 75* out.

Now, that has me wanting to build a big backyard fire pit cooking area with smoke chamber, grill and oven.

Ok, re-doing my math.

Formula for volume of a cylinder pi * r squared * height
55 gal. drum, approx 24" diameter, 40 inches high.

3.14 * 144 * 40 = approx 18,000 cu inches
less the hole
3.14 * 36 * 40 = approx 4,500 cu inches

Net 13,500 cu inches of concrete divide by 1728 to get cu feet = approx 2 cu feet of concrete.

Depending on the mix design, concrete weighs approx 148 lbs/cu ft

So that equals approx 300 lbs and I did not count the weight of the floor.

DAM, that made my head hurt, all that cipherin.(Jed Clampit mod) I need a beer.

[Here's your problem. You squared 5 (derived from subtracting 6 (total thickness of concrete)) from the radius 11. You should have only subtracted 3 from 11. 8 squared is 64. Pi (3.1415927) X 64 X 33 is 6635. 12544-6635 = 5909. I'll mod your formula from here.]
Net 5909 cu inches of concrete divide by 1728 to get cu feet = approx 3 cu feet of concrete.

Depending on the mix design, concrete weighs approx 148 lbs/cu ft

So that equals approx 444 lbs and I did not count the weight of the floor.

The next time I go out for Indian cuisine, I'll ask if they are using the Hillbilly Tandoor?

Harbor, I am not sure. He talks about 2 layers of concrete applied in 3 inch layers so that would be a 6 inch circle of concrete.

Of course he talks about cutting a door, but never mentions leaving an access hole. Otherwise that door would just open up onto a wall of concrete.

With all the labor involved, you could have made 3 UDS/BDS and cooked a feast rather that two chickens. If I need my UDS insulated, I can tuck her in a blanket.

 HUH?

Will it make that much difference over a BDS/UDS?
All that clay radiates heat, maybe a bit more like an egg
Viva la differance!
I think we at times forget that our ancestors have been cooking over fire for about a berzillion years, since that first dinosaur got hit by lightning.

My thinking is that one should have as many different cookers as possible.

I've been thinking about trying to build a brick over; now it looks like I'm thinking about building a tandoor, too. I guess I'd better get off my arse.

Sorry guys. Didnt mean to complicate things.

I was doing some research on outdoor kitchen designs and I stumbled upon that tandoor thing. I Just thought it looked funny. I thought you UDS guys would get a charge out of it.

Im all for keeping things simple. I have a pump shot gun, bolt action rifle and a revolver. I even have roll down windows in my truck. Mr Complicated Im not .

Peace
