• xenforo has sucessfully updated our forum software last night. Howevr, that has returned many templates to stock formats which MAY be missing some previous functionality. It has also fixed some boroken templates Ive taken offline. Reat assured, we are working on getting our templates back to normal, but will take a few days. Im working top down, so best bet is to stick with the default templates as I work thru them.

Hey everyone. This is my very first post. I bought a BSKD at Menard's in February on clearance...$169.00 brand new! Well, it had to sit in the box until spring, but I just got it out a couple weeks ago. I have been lurking here for a while doing research, and after two weeks at the metal shop getting the baffle and a Klose look alike charcoal basket, I'm almost ready to rock and roll. $125.00 worth of mods, so I'm sitting less than $300 for a complete unit, brand new, and pretty nicely modded. Do people seriously pay more than $600 for these things??

I still have to silicone the door, and add fire bricks, and then we'll see how she runs. I might add the drain in the bottom as well. I previously had an electric bullet style Brinkmann, so this will be my first time with charcoal only. I'll post pics when I get a chance so you can all see the baffle and the basket.

I do have two questions...#1...I am planning on putting firebricks in the cook chamber. What is the advantage of also putting them in the firebox? Just steadier temps? How much does it help?

#2...I have a wooden deck. Should I be scared of running the smoker on this thing for fear of starting a fire? My upright never had any problems. I had some large ceramic tiles under it. But I don't want to burn the house down if I let it burn for a few hours overnight. Thoughts?

I have firebricks in both the firebox and the smoke chamber... just because I had them. I really don't think the ones in the firebox do a whole lot...

I would not worry about the wood deck. Unless that is you drop smoking wood that you have on top of the firebox!!!! I have done that several times.

Good luck on getting her fired up and let us know how it goes.

#1 No need for fire brick in the firebox, but it does a great job in the smoker. wrap the bricks in foil to make clean-up easier. I clean the bricks once in the beginning of the season.

#2 No worries on the wooden deck, but as always working with fire you need to be careful and always have a fire extinguisher.

i put a steel tub under the firebox of my chargriller so if anything falls out when adding coals or wood, it falls into a tub instead of my deck

Wicked- I have a Bar B chef offset also, however I don't have the fire bricks in it at all. Where would I get these and what are the pro's and con's of having them.
I am sorry if this seems like a hijack.

Firebricks

There's a local company that does a lot of brick work around here, and they have 2 1/4 x 4 1/4 x 9 firebricks for $1.80 a piece. Pretty good deal. I'll pick some up in the next couple weeks.

Thanks for the advice on wrapping with foil That does sound like a good idea.

Some people have more money than brains and don's shop around. I have a Bandera and grease sometimes leaks and runs down the leg. If your deck is finished nice you might consider one of those BBq pads. I use an old plastic desk mat I had just to keep patio clean.

I burnt a hole through the deck once using a brinkman upright and smoking a ham and a turkey good thing is the houese didn't burn down and an even better thing the meat still turned out good. So I wouldn't suggest cooking on a deck unless absolutely necessary

Pics

Well, I said I'd post pics when I had them, and I finally got around to getting them taken this last week. I had a smoke baffle made, and a clone of a Klose charcoal basket.

I also have firebricks in place now (added after the pics were taken). All I have left is to add the drain to the cook chamber.

Dude! Light a fire in that thing! :-D Baffle mod and raising the fire grate is all you need to do - everything else is extra. And it can all be added later.

Cook something! :-D

i put a metal tub under my firebox of my chargriller. it sits on a few bricks to prevent heat transfer

If your deck is pretty, i'd put something under it. My BSKD leaks lots of grease when I smoke big stuff like butts and briskets. On the good side though the dogs all love me:biggrin: .

My dog pukes everytime he licks up too much grease.

I have an indoor/outdoor mat (like you'd see at the grocery store) without the carpet that I lay down on my deck under the grill and smoker to keep the grease off. But putting some type of metal tub under your firebox would be a good idea too to catch any falling ash, sparks, grease etc. I'm sure Menards has a decent selection. If not, it Tractor Supply or Farm Fleet.

Go to Walmart and buy a auto drip pan. Or I used to use one of those plastic mats for an office chair.
