• xenforo has sucessfully updated our forum software last night. Howevr, that has returned many templates to stock formats which MAY be missing some previous functionality. It has also fixed some boroken templates Ive taken offline. Reat assured, we are working on getting our templates back to normal, but will take a few days. Im working top down, so best bet is to stick with the default templates as I work thru them.

Hi,

I know I'm going to catch some flack for asking this, but does anyone use goggles when checking on food on large smokers? I'm certainly not the most experienced cook here, but every time I check on something on a smoker I wind up tearing up and squinting.

I stashed a pair of safety glasses in my deck box and have to remind myself to use them when lighting lump Mesquite, I can't remember which forum it was, but someone got it in the eye and it just isn't worth not using them. Use them if it will help you, hell, they sell onion goggles and the guy that marketed them laughs all the way to the bank!

You sure you aren't tearing up 'cause your Q looks so damn purty?

Seriously though, why the hell not use goggles if that helps you?

I think the cheapest kind you'll find are swim goggles. Easy to put on and take off, too.

Googles would work.

I try to step back for 5 or so seconds as I open the door to let the first wave of smoke clear.

Some will give you the other answer... Don't check on the food !!! Use a probe and don't open the door unless nescessary.

now why didn't I think of that? actually I am wondering if they cloud up from the heat?

Wow! Add a robe and fuzzy slippers to that and you have the perfect Q outfit! :-D

I like Ronnel's idea, but I usually open the firebox door before I open the smoke chamber. This does two things, it lets the smoke exit more directly, and also fans the fire so that it will come back to temp quickly. Also, no more tears!

Here is a picture of my daughter's goggles she wears them for BBQing. I think you should have something that stands out. Maybe even use a snorkel too.

I think it would be a big help if it really bothers you. When I remember  I try to let some of the smoke clear before I get too close! :-D

ahem....

Mem’ries light the corners of my mind.
Misty water color mem’ries of the way we were.
Scattered pictures of the smiles we left behind.
Smiles we gave to one another for the way we were....
