• xenforo has sucessfully updated our forum software last night. Howevr, that has returned many templates to stock formats which MAY be missing some previous functionality. It has also fixed some boroken templates Ive taken offline. Reat assured, we are working on getting our templates back to normal, but will take a few days. Im working top down, so best bet is to stick with the default templates as I work thru them.

Do you need to remove the bark from a piece of wood before you use it?

I prefer to remove it if I can... so i do if its easy, like the thick stuff. the thin stuff thats well attached I leave.. or remove what i can. I find it smells a litttle "barky" when burning, but dont think it imparts any bad flavors. ONly thing is, the bark is to assist the tree to retain moisture, so when its left intact, sometimes it causes steaming, or slow burning..

thanks!!! you would think that with two years of forestry under my belt, I could answer a question like that myself.......must have been drunk that day!!!!! Well.....it was back in the 70's and i was drunk most of the time in college!

thanks kevin.. i put it in the roadmap.

Thanks for the link Kevin......should have done a search myself but, was sitting here and the question came across my mind and I started typing before I thought about it!

Depends. What are you using the bark for?

Put the stick in the firebox bark side down against the hot coals. Burn the bark off first.

As an old guys that I hunt with says: Stack it bark side up, burn it bark side down.

I rarely de-bark-- but then again I'm also not using wood as a primary heat source in the ECB. I've never noticed anything "off" from barky wood.

If the bark comes off easy I pull it off otherwise it goes in the FB. Many guys here in Texas swear that if you have no bark you have no flavor, I disagree, though some even go so far as to use extra bark for more flavor. I think it's a non issue.

I've heard of people using only the bark from hickory for flavoring, too.....I've never had a problem with using the bark, myself, although someone else that I know swears that the the bark on cherry can add off flavors or colors....
