Ok! I went to Lowe's and bought some Stubb's due to the ecstatic posts here. What can I expect from it as opposed to Kingsford( with hickory chips) as well as other brands? They also had a "Cowboy" brand of lump that interested me Any help or instruction will be appreciated Thanks Doug:becky:

Cowboy is really solid stuff. Stubbs is pretty good. Low ash and burns for a while. I think you will be very happy with it.

I really like the Cowboy charcoal for normal cooking above 300 deg. It burns hot. I believe that the Big Green Egg, Whole Foods and Fresh Market brands are private label versions of Cowboy as well.

For longer, more controlled cooks I only use Wicked Good Weekend Warrior Blend. That stuff is amazing. I have yet to find a charcoal that is as dense and clean burning as Wicked Good.

Have not tried stubbs but have tried cowboy....I did not like cowboy at all. Not dense at all and the pieces were very small.

Thanks people--it sounds like the cowboy lump would be good in my old castiron cookin n' kettle w/ rotisserie , and the Stubb's with my smoker.I'll be honest though , I like my Weber Genesis also.

Not sure who'd having the positive experiences with Cowboy lump, but if you search it here or google it and find the Nakedwhiz review you won't find many positive comments.

I've gotten a soda can, rocks and completely unburnt wood in bags I've bought. But maybe they cleaned up their act.

Never tried Stubbs though. Heard mixed reviews. Our Lowe's is now carrying it. Might have to give it a try.

I've been using Cowboy because that is almost all I can get at a reasonable Price. Have not had any bad experience with it. :clap2:

Just bought a bag of Stubbs, Will use it this weekend, but Lowes is almost a 40 mile round trip so I doubt I'll be using much of it.

If you have Cowboy lump check it before you use it. I was one of the lucky ones that found a piece of the kiln insulation in my Weber chimney. Of course it was dark and I didn't notice it till the oily black smoke started rolling up.

Dug around and pulled out a gooey, black, flaming mass of gunk. I'm glad I had decided to light it up in the chimney instead of dumping it on top of what was already in the firebox. Needless to say, I won't be using much Cowboy lump from now on.

On the other hand, I like Stubb's. It's all natural and I believe it uses cornstarch as a binder. If you have an ash spill the first rain (or your water hose) will wash it away. You won't have a little pile of lime left there forever.

Unless I somehow scored a free bag of the Wicked Good Weekend Warrior Blend, I will ALWAYS use Stubbs and Stubbs only. After much trying and wasting of money on different charcoal and lump types, for me, Stubbs is as good as it gets...burns hot, long, and leaves absolutely no ash in the bottom of my kettle.

So...anybody want to try to change my mind with some Wicked Good WWB?!?!:-D

Thanks--maybe I'll try lump other than cowboy.Gonna try the Stubb's soon.:clap2:

maxwell, Don't be dissuaded from trying something entirely because of our feedback. If you don't have any other readily available options and you want to see what lump is like give it a try. At least we'll have softened the blow if you open the bag and find a bunch of garbage. On the other hand, if you have a good experience, it may seem even better since you have lowered your expectations a bit.

I haven't tried a bag of cowboy in years because of my experience. They *may* have turned things around. If you give it a try, let us know!
