• xenforo has sucessfully updated our forum software last night. Howevr, that has returned many templates to stock formats which MAY be missing some previous functionality. It has also fixed some boroken templates Ive taken offline. Reat assured, we are working on getting our templates back to normal, but will take a few days. Im working top down, so best bet is to stick with the default templates as I work thru them.

I'm wanting to buy a SpiceWine smoker but have a delima on my hands that I need help resolving. I currently have a 29' bumber hitch travel trailer and want to build a platform on the back to push my smoker up on for travel. Does any body out there have any past knowledge on this? How did it affect the way your trailer pulled? Does anyone have pics they can share?

Thanks,
Freda

Smoker Transport Problem

I am looking to purchase a large Spicewine smoker but have some issues with transporting from comp to comp. Does anyone out there have any experience or knowledge of building a platform on the back of a 29' bumper hitch travel trailer? Did it change the way the trailer pulled good or bad? Am I crazy for even thinking about doing this?

Any help is appreciated.

without knowing your exact configuration, I would have to say Crazy-
Seriously, I think the weight of a unit like a large Spicewine added th the rear of a long travel trailer would change the towing dynamics so drasticaly that you could not adjust for them.

A 29 foot bumper hitch is a whole lotta trailer already. I'm thinking 800 pounds of cooker plus the weight of the platform and supporting structure may be stretching it. I'm sure it is possible, but maybe not practical.

I was faced with the same dilemma, I ended up buying a 5x8 flatbed with ramp this weekend. My other option was placing a ramp up to the bed of my pickup and getting a hernia. But now my wife has to transport too. We have two trucks so it's not too big a problem.

I did get a quote last weekend to get a custom made platform. It will need to be bolted to your frame too. They have commercial ones that slide in and out from underneath of your trailer but they only have a 200lb weight limit., So that will not work for you. I guess your best option is getting one that is custom made. My quote was $1000 and I am in Ft Worth TX.

Let me know how it goes.

Thanks for the advice guys, kinda what I expected. Sounds like I better seek other alternatives. I assume the same advice will hold true for trying to pull the smoker behind the trailer?

Believe it or not, they do allow fifth wheel travel trailer / fishing boat towed behind, combinations here. It scares the heck out of me when I see one.

Off topic here, but related. I used to work in the road construction business and pulled many overweight and oversize loads (with permits, most of the time). We had an oil storage tank (50,000 gallons, we called it the Valdeeze, that was way too big. Got caught on the scale one time, had to bring in a portable welder and axles, added 6 axles to the dang thing just to get it out of impound. I also handed over a check to the clerk for the $37,500.00 fine. Judge made me sign a guarantee for the amount. My boss shrugged his shoulders and told me that's the cost of doing business. Not my money, but still made me nervous as heck. I now choose to do it right and avoid the hassles.

I pull my smoker behind my 12' cargo trailer. It pulls fine. However, the swing when turning of a 12' trailer is very different from my 29' camper. I would be very concerned having to manage that much behind me with another ball that far behind the axles of my camper.

I've seen many pulling boats behind fifth wheel trailers, but never behind travel trailers.

I don't know where this is legal or not. I've pulled mine in Iowa, Kansas, Oklahoma, and Missouri. Have come face to face with many local police and troopers. Have never had an issue.

I have two Med. Spicewine Smokers i haul in the back of a 18' Toyhauler and you feel the added weight for sure. The first time i unhooked the SUV w/o putting the rear jacks down the tongue of the trailer almost got away from me. I also added a Reese Hitch and brake control in the Suv. Jimmy (smokincracker) has a longer Toyhauler he will probably chime in.

I almost went for the toy hauler, but the boss said no. I tried to point out the added advantages, still no!

I went with a 5th Wheel toy hauler here. No regrets. I can roll any cooker I want up to 10' long in the garage. I have had a kingfisher in there, a Southern Style, and even an FEC.... And all my tables, tents, etc. It tows like a dream.
