• xenforo has sucessfully updated our forum software last night. Howevr, that has returned many templates to stock formats which MAY be missing some previous functionality. It has also fixed some boroken templates Ive taken offline. Reat assured, we are working on getting our templates back to normal, but will take a few days. Im working top down, so best bet is to stick with the default templates as I work thru them.

good afternoon, y'all..

i'm planning on roasting up to 100 lb or so of butt and maybe 4-5 chickens and turkey breasts around the middle of june (family gathering here in marietta).

i've been using a combination of lump charcoal and the kingsford stuff and have been reasonably satisfied with it, although having to clean out the ashes in the firebox 3/4 the way through is a pain in the arse. i figured to cook that much pork would take me roughly 14-18 hours. how do I gauge how much wood or charcoal to buy? i don't want to get stuck not having enough (then i'd really have to eat crow...). I'm also not sure if i should be using seasoned hardwood or charcoal. any suggestions?

also, any sources i could use to get the wood (i'd like to try either red oak, pecan, or cherry, but i'm open to almost anything).

thx......

Hey pig.

goto HD and get 2 two packs of Kingsford.

That way, as a minimum, you aint running out of charcoal. Its a long summer, it will be used.

Use the charcoal as a base, then add hard wood and flavor wood.

Last time I was in Sam's they had 48# Kingsford (2-24# bags) for around $10.50. Most places charge that or more for 40#.

I always keep about 100 lbs of charcoal and about another 200 lbs of hardwood around so I never run out. Use charcoal to get her going, and then switch to all hardwood. Less ash, better flavor, longer burns (unless you have done the Al Mod).

Smokeypig, For the fatty suggestion I owe you one, so here is my best suggestion, look in the yellow pages for cabinet shops. If you have custom shops in your area any of them will have red oak scraps they throw out in copious quantities. If you don't mind doing a bit of dumpster diving you can get plenty of hardwood in no time at all. No plywood and I would avoid anything that has been glued together, but 10-25% of the hardwood most cabinet shops buy ends up in the trash. You might get lucky and find some cherry, pecan or maple too.
