Hey yall. I have an old gas sunbeam grill that still has a good gas element thing in it. Has anyone ever added a "gas starter" to a smoker? Does it work well?
Thanks.

If you have room in the firebox it should work...you might have to clean the jets occassionally (like every time) to keep them from plugging with ash.

I use a large "custom" burner in my Kingfisher to preheat it. I also use a brush burner to light off the charcoal and/or wood and it preheats the cooker, too.

Some large cookers have gas piped into the firebox for lighting or holding heat.

Works great!
But one word of caution.....
gas + air in a contained space + fire = BOOM!!!!!!!!!

Be sure you do not leave the flame unattended. A flame out and then a re-light could be big trouble.

What he said! I left mine alone when I first got it only to comeback to gas being on and no flame. I quickly turned off the valve and cleared the firebox of the gas, I could have blew up my rig:shock: . Now I prop the door when burning that sucker and try to stay close by. Learn from me and do not do what my dumb arse did:biggrin:

The OKlahoma Joe offset I recently picked up on Craigslist here locally on L.I. had a tube into the firebox with a small canister like a coleman propane guy hanging on the bottom with a hook. I understand this used to be an accessory that some folks would use on these years ago along with the old New Braunfels pits.
I am refurbishing this cooker slowly but surely as it had been "abused" a bit in it's previous lives.(It has the original plate with a serial number of 000027 or 29.)
Labor of love mod.
But, the tube etc. was all rusted out and I have since eliminated it and will plug up the small hole going into the firebox.
Personally, I just try to keep it simple and use a chimney, but I can see where it could be convenient.
