• xenforo has sucessfully updated our forum software last night. Howevr, that has returned many templates to stock formats which MAY be missing some previous functionality. It has also fixed some boroken templates Ive taken offline. Reat assured, we are working on getting our templates back to normal, but will take a few days. Im working top down, so best bet is to stick with the default templates as I work thru them.

Here is what I have so far. I have to find a welder who likes BBQ so I have something to negotiate with.

Thoughts on how to proceed will be greatly appreciated.

Give a little info on the tank...what size is it,how thick where'd you get it and was it wexpensive?? Inquiring minds want to know!!

Sorry Bro, works on my end:oops:

Heres the item #: Item #: 160670

It's a 86 Gallon well pressure tank.

Sorry for not responding sooner. It is infact a pressure tank from Lowe's. I work at Lowe's and I rescued this perfectly good tank from being squished in the compactor.

The metal is about an 1/8" thick on the sides and a little heavier on the top and bottom.

I took a few measurements. The tank is 23" across the inside and it stands 51" in height to the top of the dome. From what I have read there needs to be 24" clearance from fire to meat. That is going to put the grates way high on this cooker with no lid to remove. This can still be done since there will be more room on one grate than I will ever need for myself.

I am wondering if a wsm magnum design would be better. I will most likely design it to accomidate both concepts.

I am also planning on a 17" x 8" charcoal ring.

Thoughts will be appreciated.

A guy could cut this in two places to make it WSM like, with a lower charcoal bowl, a middle section, and a removable lid. A length of strap steel could be welded on the inner circumference of the lower bowl and lid to make it a piece that could be disassembled. Just a thought.
at 23" you'll be able to use 22.5" weber grates.
Make sure you leave enough room uner the chrcoal grate/basket for ash to accumulate.
Put some legs on it and you're stylin'!

Do you have have welding done? Is there any reason you can't build what you want with a drill, an angles grinder, screws, bolts, etc.? If not, it shouldn't be too hard to find a welder who likes Q.

I like the idea of being able to remove the lid. After a bit of welding on the door and welding some legs on, then I can do the business of drilling holes for grates. ( I am not a welder )

If you want to keep it a one piece unit a thought I had would be to
cut another small door opening under the main door so you have access to the fire area.
I really give you credit for your idea.
Git R Done !!
Just my 2 cents

I thought long and hard before I made the first cut. I am really thinking about adding an ash dump to the bottom of the tank. It would mean cutting a three to six inch diameter hole in the bottom or doing something like a Weber Kettle. It would also mean raising the unit about a foot.

It's either that or cutting a small door in the back of the smoker to access the fire.

If you were thinking more in terms of adding fuel, my hopes would be that the smoker would be tight enough to burn longer than my wsm.
