• xenforo has sucessfully updated our forum software last night. Howevr, that has returned many templates to stock formats which MAY be missing some previous functionality. It has also fixed some boroken templates Ive taken offline. Reat assured, we are working on getting our templates back to normal, but will take a few days. Im working top down, so best bet is to stick with the default templates as I work thru them.

I would like to get a small smoker to use specifically for testing rubs, temps, smoke etc. It would need to be capable of temps at least to 350 and a wood burner of course. Portable and well built important. I guess even a charcoal pit could work but I would not be using charcoal. Any ideas much appreciated.

Why no charcoal?

The WSM (14.5 or 18.5) is the most smoker bang for the buck out there and meets your criteria. Well, other than it's not a stick burner.

You are right about the WSM at least from all the reviews I have read this evening. My smoker is pretty large and it's a task to break it out just for trying out new rubs, etc.

22-1/2 in. Smokey Mountain Cooker Smoker

I am reading about this model and the photos show wood, chips and charcoal all as fuel. Vents top and bottom. Will check out asap.

The 22.5" WSM is pretty big. An 18.5" WSM might be better, or a PBC. You could take a look at the Red Box Smoker, too. It is a small insulated cabinet type that sells for around $400.

Maybe more than you would want to spend, but a backwoods chubby is a heck of a smoker, and fits the bill for being small. I use charcoal and wood chunks in mine. You can remove water pan and heat shield and run the temp up if you like.

Took the plunge ......... WSM 22.5

Good choice I own a 22. I run it with a heavy duty foiled terra-cotta saucer resting in the empty water pan. I also replaced the standard fire ring of tack welded #9 flat expanded metal. This increases air flow and fuel capacity. Best bang for the buck at this price point. I know you will enjoy it.
