• xenforo has sucessfully updated our forum software last night. Howevr, that has returned many templates to stock formats which MAY be missing some previous functionality. It has also fixed some boroken templates Ive taken offline. Reat assured, we are working on getting our templates back to normal, but will take a few days. Im working top down, so best bet is to stick with the default templates as I work thru them.

Slow'n Sear Vs. Slow 'N Sear Plus

I don't own either. The only difference is that the Plus model has a grate in the bottom for lump charcoal users

Mine is the regular without the bottom and there are times I wish it had the bottom. I keep reminding myself how much more $ they wanted for the Plus and I am happy again.

I've only used the 26.75 version with the bottom. That bottom plate is important to me for some reason, but the owner tells me its not totally necessary and they have happy customers with both designs.

Wouldn't cutting out some sheet metal to that shape, drilling 3/4" holes in it and dropping it in do the same thing?

Expanded metal would work great too.

Yeah, sure. Well, it would do SOME of the same stuff.

The guy who designed this is a physicist who thought through EVERYTHING about it. So stuff like the design of the trough is made to almost completely kill radiant heat and the shape prevents the water from boiling out too quickly. There was a bunch of other stuff he told me that never would have occurred to me.

Also, the tolerances are so tight...it fits so closely that I had to take out my extra charcoal grate in the kettle so it could slide in under the cooking grate tabs. It literally fits like a glove.

Plus, the materials are SO premium. Hand welded 304 stainless that weighs 8 pounds.

I like to hack up stuff too but by the time I'm done buying materials, hardware and at least one tool, it's never THAT much cheaper. I do like DYI stuff thought so I totally get it.

I meant just putting the bottom into a (non plus version) so coals won't fall through.

Totally agree it looks like a solid product and wouldn't be cheap to make yourself. I sure know this well, you wouldn't believe how much it cost to even make prototypes of stuff I'm making.... It's INSANELY expensive.

If I can come up with $90 for the slow n sear I am going to spring the extra 25 for the bottom grate. Just makes it a little more convenient IMO

The only advantage I can see from the plus is if you extinguish your fire before the coals are consumed. With a perforated floor you can shake out the ash remaining the coals. When I pick up my SNS without the floor I have to scoop up the remaining coals. Maybe there is another reason but I am not seeing it.

That's the advantage I see, the grate makes it very easy to shake out the ashes out of the remaining charcoal.

Many thanks people, appreciate it!

Just need to work out the best/cheapest way of getting one to me in the UK:mrgreen:

Although saying that I'm coming over for holiday at the end of October - but then that's a large chunk of luggage space...

I've never flown on an international flight, but with the SNS in the box, I'd carry it on as opposed to packing in the suit case.

Good luck and enjoy you Holiday.

Robert

I just did a video on Facebook about the SnS and somebody asked about availability in the UK and the manufacturer came on and replied and said they have a retailer over there. Let me see if I can find that information.

**Edit***OK the name of the company is Wishbox USA. He said they offer free shipping.
