• xenforo has sucessfully updated our forum software last night. Howevr, that has returned many templates to stock formats which MAY be missing some previous functionality. It has also fixed some boroken templates Ive taken offline. Reat assured, we are working on getting our templates back to normal, but will take a few days. Im working top down, so best bet is to stick with the default templates as I work thru them.

I took the left over aluminum I had from making my baffle and made some heat shields and air deflectors. I cut two pieces 6 inches high by the length of the firebox and put them on top of the fire grate. (Pic 2 & 4) I cut two more the width of the firebox by 5 inches high and placed them under the fire grate at each end to seal off the air from coming up around the fire. (Pic 1 & 3) The piece at the damper end needed to be bent up just slightly to direct all air flow under the fire grate. (Pic 4) Just doing this has allowed me to get burns of several hours at around the 230 to 240 mark. It's not real pretty, but seems to work rather well. Has anyone else tried anything like this?

If it works pretty ain'g got nothing to do with it!

I need to build a bigger charcoal basket -- the one I made from one piece of expanded metal works but I have to add a chimney of Kingsford every hour or so -- just need some higher sides to get more charcoal in when I'm doing the Minion method start!!

slat-
out of curiousity, what level is your grate set on? mine is on the lowest (the second was impeded by the damper latch and the third was visually too high). Functional, not pretty is the name of the game)

I used about 2 and a half chimneys of kingsford since noon. I also use wood too. I would think that if I added ends made from expanded metal to the two sides I already have I would guess I could load it up and it would be like a big charcoal basket. When I started today I layed a bottom layer of charcoal 6 bricks deep by 6 wide. Then built the first 2 rows up to 5 deep. Between row 3 & 4 I put a stick of oak and in row 5 & 6 I put a stick of hickory. Then a layer of charcoal on top of that then a couple chunks of hickory on top of that. I lit the end nearest the damper and let it burn to the smoke chamber opening.

I would have went higher, but that is what I happened to have on hand. I went from the fire grate up though instead of all the way up from the bottom. My grate is on the lowest level.
