• xenforo has sucessfully updated our forum software last night. Howevr, that has returned many templates to stock formats which MAY be missing some previous functionality. It has also fixed some boroken templates Ive taken offline. Reat assured, we are working on getting our templates back to normal, but will take a few days. Im working top down, so best bet is to stick with the default templates as I work thru them.

I have a friend that just called me and said he is doing what he thought was 2 pork butts, but what he bought was 2 pork shoulders. I have never done any before, so my question is do you smoke them the same as a butt, or is it different. I've done loads of butts, and walked him through that process, so just want to make sure I'm not steering him wrong. Any help would be great!

A butt is part of the shoulder. The whole shoulder is made up of two parts, the butt and the picnic. As far as I know both portions would cook up the same way. With that being said, I've never cooked a butt as all I can find around here are the picnics.

The butt, or "Boston Butt" is the shoulder. The "butt" name came from pre-revolutionary Boston, where the shoulders were stored in barrels, known as butts. So basically a butt is just a pork shoulder with a very old and fancy name.

Someone may want to cite some sources on this, since I'm just going from vague memory and far too lazy to actually look it up.

Cook a whole shoulder just like a Butt or a Picnic. Makes for some good eats when chopped together with the skin.

So good. Love the crispy skin chopped in with the pork. Something I love, but only do occasionally. Why? Good question.
