So I got a 7' Santoku from my Mother inlaw. I believe it was bought at Bed Bath and Beyond. It held a very nice sharp edge for a long time.

One day I noticed it had a chip in the blade. No big deal I thought, it will come out when it gets sharpened. So my wife runs it through the dishwasher as usual and when it came out I about had a fit of rage run through me.

The video you are about to see is kind of crappy and I apologize. It was shot on a cell phone. And mods, if this is in the worng place, I sincerely apologize and ask that you move this to where it may belong.

I appreciate any feedback and you taking a look.

Will these chips come out with a good sharpening? I do have a sharpener (manual not electric) that I can use but I am afraid to screw it up worse than it already is.

They will come out just fine but the dishwasher didn't do that... Knives aren't suppose to be run through the dishwasher because of the handle material, not the blade. What kind of cutting board are you using?

Damn, that almost looks serrated.

Depending on how they are put in the dishwasher, the force of the water could cause them to slam into something else. For that reason, and for the handles, all my good knives are washed by hand. My wife's cheap, Asian store knives go through the washer all the time. They don't look like that, but maybe I just haven't noticed it.

Wow...that knife took a beating. If you have the skills (and testicular fortitude), you might try fixing/sharpening it yourself. If you have a sharpening service relatively close by, I would take it there. There's one by me and the guy is awesome. Those pro sharpener guys are masters at bringing things like your knife back from the dead.

Did you try to return it? Bed Bath has pretty awesome return policy. Maybe even contact calphalon the knife might be covered under warranty. I would try to hand sharpen it isn't going to hurt it. We hand wash all of our knives and I dry them off right away

Knives should NEVER go in the dishwasher. This can all be ground out/repaired with a good sharpening. Honestly though, The sharpening/repair may cost more than the knife is worth. That knife is probably worth around $30.

I would expect you would pay near that to any knowledgeable knife sharpener. I've used Korin.com to repair a japanese knife before and I believe it was around $40 to sharpen out some chips and crack on knife I had bought my mom.. She had given it a similar treatment...

Or you may just find a guy with a grinding wheel and 5 bucks later you're good to go! I wouldn't put too much time or money into fixing this.. You could easily buy the same knife again and save some time and trouble..

Yeah If I could have prevented it from going through the dishwasher I would have. Now the dishwasher dont work and all dishes are done by hand ;-)

And yeah, not sure it is worth taking to a pro. I do have a sharpener and may give it a try. I do know for certain I have never cut bones with this knife. I used a big a*s cleaver on spare ribs. The biggest cut this knife has ever cut was pork loins. I 100% do not know how this would have happened. I had pondered contacting the company and asking about it. I have had it a year and 3 months now.

Try a sharpener and get nics out or call it a loss and buy new?

I'm telling you the dishwasher didn't do that to that cutting edge unless it fell into the the spray bar and even then it would have only hit it once on its fall to the bottom. I know a bit about heat treat and that didn't happen in the dishwasher unless the heat treat is WAY off.

Absolutely resharpen it, at least give it a try!

All my knives , even the $10.00 Walmart knives are washed by hand only the steak and butter knives get a ride in the dishwasher

All of our knives are hand washed. Do you use a steel before every use. I think this is the best habit you can have to KEEP a knife sharp.

I can certainly believe it didnt happen in the dishwasher. I noticed it after it came out is all. I truly am not sure how this happened. I never cut bones or near them. If there are bones I bust out the cleaver.

Yeah lessons learned on dish washing.

I would use a steel if I knew how. I royally suck with steels and sharpening knives. And when I say I suck at it, I mean I really suck at it!

I have tried and tried and I do more damage than good. That is why I was concerned about trying to use the knife sharpener I have on this knife to try and fix. I figure I would jack it up even worse.

It totally can happen in the dishwasher, just as easily as it can happen by leaving it in the sink or keeping it loose in a drawer with other utensils. The sharp edge getting banging into silverware and/or dishes is all it takes to ruin a blade. As soon as you're done using a knife, hand wash, dry, and put away. I recommend a magnetic wall strip to store your knives. And fwiw, spending a lot of money on good blade will not prevent that from happening. Bad knife habits ruin blades. You need to treat your knives well or they will get farked up. It got to the point in my house that we have his/hers knives. I even keep hers sharp, as long as she doesn't use mine.

I like the his and hers idea. And I will admit I am guilty of putting the knife in a drawer and forgetting about it until it was needed. Now I do have a block I keep them in.

And as far as the dishwasher goes, ours went out. The pump relay is bad and I'm not fixing it. It encourages people to NOT let the sink get full and wait for a full washer load. lol call me cheap!! So no more knives in the dish washer. ;-)

I totally never thought of the old magnetic strip idea mounted for knives. I will be making a trip to town tomorrow to pick one up to mount for knives. Thanks I appreciate that idea! :thumb:
