What the Fark!

I open up the WSM today, farking rust starting on the grates (about 2 inchs water in the bottom too, as the side door was off kilter.)

What the fark is that.

I clean these things each and every cook, never put the thing away with more than a speck of black POOPIE in the nooks and crannys on the ends of the racks, and theres rust starting on them.

What the fark is that? I had my ECB for 5 years and not a speck of rust. 2 years on the WSM, and I get the copper surprise.

Am I doing something wrong?

So I ask:

Do you clean all the black POOPIE from smoke off your WSM grates?

After you scrub them, should I be spraying with oil BEFORE I put the thing away?

I used it last about 5 weeks ago, and am shocked at the condition of the grates.

If they had porcelan bandera type grates available, I would pay handsomely for them

I don't scrub mine down - just a "green scrubby" and dishsoap. I don't try and get all the black stuff off.

Clean?.....Scrub?.....what are you guys talking about? If you clean it with water then you should expect it to rust. I usually just knock the big gobbers off and just wipe the thing down with a dry cloth. This leaves a nice coating of greese on the grates, and that will stop the rust. Next time you want to use the grill be sure to start the fire early and allow all the rancid fat to burn off before you plop any fresh meat on the thing. When it really gets dirty I use something made by General Motors called Top End Head Cleaner. After soaking it in that for a week or so I coat it with WD-40 to keep it from rusting between uses. Once again, be sure to burn off all the residue before using it to cook. Here is another trick. If your left over BBQ molds in the fridge after 3 to 4 weeks just remember that mold is a plant. To stop the growth of unwanted plants on your food all you have to do is inject it with a 50/50 mixture of Tobasco and Agent Orange before cooking. Then you can use the left over meat for up to 3 month to make your kids school lunches. Lastly, if you want to really get your charcoal glowing fast you might try giving it a nice coating of jellied gasoline (I like Napalm brand from Dow Chemical Co. the best). Just be sure to stand back when you light it...(burp).

Sounds like the WSM grates are plated and you scoured off the plating. I betcha someone makes replacement grates that are all stainless or porcelan coated. Personally, I wouldn't worry about a little rust and Wayne may have a point ; at leat about being too hygenic. Only cook with agent orange as a marinade. ;-)

Fire it up, then quick wire brush the carbon off the grills and use is all I do. Ain't made me sick yet.

Damn Glen,

Now you making me feel OLD!

Jellied gasoline is NAPALM - as used in Vietnam (Wayne has flashbacks every now and then).

Agent Orange is a defoliant that unfortunately Uncle Sugar also sprayed all over a lot of US troops camping out in Southeast Asia!!

Both are nasty POOPIE. NAPALM sticks and burns.

Agent Orange has been identified as causing all kinds of neurological and other types of problems.

Kind of like running through the DTD sprayers down where in FL in the 50's and 60's -- I keep expecting to have to sue Polk County and the State of Florida for exposure!! :D

Oh.... got it. " I love the smell of Napalm in the morning"
Ya I was just a kid when that all happened :)

If you do not remember the term "napalm" then I guess the term "Chrispy Critters" is out of the question.

Dang FNGs (They are the ones wearing new boots.)

No POOPIE!

Get your ass killed, too!

FNG: Fuckin' new guy!

Um, WSM grates

how the fark you guts take that to Napalm.

I really wish you guys wouldnt hijack

I really wish you guys wouldnt hijack

Uh huh! Bullshit! :D Oh dark prince of the hijack. Ye Wielder of the Grout!

So, why so late showing up? :D

What about getting soe ceramic-coated grates?
I see those everywhere and they're great.

and THATS why i dont brush the grates off till the next cook. Just leave them alone and close the dampers and empty the waterpan, then put it back in upside down on top of the lower rack. Next time around, when you light the ring, put the grates on the bottom right on toop of the coals and put the waterpan upside on the grates and leave it like that with the lid off while things heat up. When your ready, tap the waterpan, anything in there will jus flake off, then hit the grades witha BBQ pad(not a wire brush). The wire brush removes the finish and makes them rust.

Another trick I learned was to cover the WSM with a large trash bag before putting the cover back on . . . this prevents any water that leaks through the seams of the cover from entering the smoker through the lid or side door......

My WSM filled up with water (to the air vents) even with the longa$$ OEM cover on. I haven't figured that one out yet.

Same here, I had to dump that and the charcola sludge out.

We both musta experience some of that ground rain that fell to the sky

Thinking of writing Ripley's

And you others where right on

Brillo pad had removed the "shine" of the aluminum. Thems some dull grates now.

I'll try spraying with veg oil before putting away.
