Anyone have a rub recipe that has no sugar of any type? My blood glucose is really to a normal point and I don't want or need any sugar to mess me up again. Any help?

Salt, pepper, onion powder, garlic powder. You can add cayenne or herbs.

Also, There are some rubs for diabetics around here. I'll look for some.

I have one, someplace, that some one gave me. I will look for it....be back....

Sorry it is a picture..."smart phone" and I don't see eye to eye on the copy/paste thing...

Merry Christmas

Don't think Mad Hunky has any sugar, if it does it isn't much. A good flavor. Different. Love it on chicken.

Ingredients:
3 tablespoons paprika
1 tablespoon onion powder
1 tablespoon garlic powder
1 tablespoon ground basil
1 tablespoon black pepper
1 tablespoon red pepper
1 tablespoon mustard powder

================================

Bob_M's Sugarless Rub.

8 parts splenda
2 parts chili powder
2 parts paprika
1 part salt
1 part pepper
1 part garlic powder
1 part onion powder
1/2 part mustard powder

1 tbsp chipotle powder
1 tbsp new mexico pepper powder
1 teaspoon thyme
1 tbsp garlic powder
1 tbsp onion powder
1 tbsp celery salt
1/4 teaspoon cumin
Salt and pepper to taste.

I also normally add 1 tbsp ground raw sugar, but leave it out when my Ma's in town as she is a diabetic.
Most of my sugars come in the form of apple juice, wooster, and cider vinegar spray.

In the BBQ world there are many rubs to choose from.

In the past someone mentioned that "Big Butz" Rubs have no sugar but I can't verify this as I have never tried it.

But Big Ron's makes a sugar free rub. It is called, "In the House"

Keep in mind that rub's does not necessarily require sugar other than to help balance the salt/savory content...

Try using use your favorite recipe and just delete the sugar, You'll probably never notice the difference. If it seems just a little too salty just reduce the salt as well next time.

Here are a collection of sugar-free rubs as well as some that are also salt-free as well previously posted on The Brethren.

Sugarless Texas Sprinkle Barbeque Rub
"A smooth blend of spices with no sugar. A tablespoon of cayenne gives this rub a good wallup".

1/3 cup salt
1/4 cup paprika
3 tablespoon chili powder
2 tablespoon black pepper
1 tablespoon ground cumin
1 tablespoon garlic powder
1 tablespoon cayenne

Combine all the ingredients in a sifter, and sift to blend well. Store in an airtight jar in the refridgerator for 2 to 3 weeks or in the freezer for up to 6 months.

How to use it
Sprinkle this rub very heavy on your brisket, ribs, pork, chicken or fish. This rub can be used on both grilled meats and barbeque cooked over indirect heat because of the absence of sugar in the rub.

Also a collection of sugar-free BBQ Sauces previously posted

Diabetic barbecue sauce:

1 Cup Heinz Reduced Sugar Ketchup
1 Cup Cabernet Red Wine
1 Cup Splenda Sweetener
1/4 Cup Water
1/4 Cup Yellow Onion, diced
1/4 Cup Green Bell Pepper, diced
2 Tablespoons Worcestershire Sauce
2 Tablespoons Yellow Mustard
1 Tablespoon Diabetic Rub
1 Tablespoon Paprika
1 teaspoon Louisiana Hot Sauce
1 teaspoon Liquid Smoke

================================

BluDawg's Dad is a Diabetic & loves this sauce

2 T butter
1 clove garlic or 1 t garlic powder
1/4 c. finely chopped onion or 1 T dried minced onion
1 T lemon juice
1 c. tomato sauce
1/3 c. Splenda
1 T molasses
2 T Worcestershire sauce
1 T chili powder
1 T vinegar
1 t coarse ground black pepper
1/4 t salt

Combine all ingredients in a sauce pan and bring to a boil; reduce heat and simmer for 5 -10 minutes, stirring occasionally; remove from heat and let stand. I usually double the batch and keep some in a pint canning jar with lid in the fridge - it will keep for a couple of months if you can sty out of the jar.

PSA:

My GP rub DOES have sugar..but a low amount. Same for salt. 24% salt...18% sugar.

I DO have a No Salt version of the GP as well. For those with issues..or who just want to add their own..if they wanna... :biggrin1:

I don't agree with any so far. I too am diabetic.

Years ago I tested spices by smoking each one I wanted to use on a ceramic tile and a little lard. The tastes shocked me as some became bitter and most lost all flavor. This is what I wound up with and I use it today

One part onion powder
One part garlic powder
Two parts paprika
Four parts chile powder

I buy Tones big bottles of spices at SAMs club.

Put it on heavy, it will blacken but will not be bitter.

I use Stubbs sugar free hickory flavored sauce and add salt in the sauce never in the rub.
I challenge any to make a better one than this.

My favorite rub is about as simple as it can get. (much bigger container though)

I start all my own rubs with basically equal salt and pepper. Then add others (if any) as I feel that day. Easy way to control it. Next most used add is garlic powder. If I want it spicy I add in some Chipotle, Cayenne or Paprika. That's really all you ever need, but I've been known to experiment!!

I've been on a central Texas kick lately. No sugar there! Just make your favorite rub without sugar. S&P, paprika, onion powder, garlic powder, chili de arbol.

Splenda spikes blood sugar for some people.
My wife was experimenting with xylitol last year to see if that would work for her.
Nothing conclusive yet
