RTC600C Review - Any advice?

I just can't make $100 work or even look good to my financial advisor (wife) for a Redhot Thermapen. But these RTC600C's are about $25 on amazon - has anyone used these, and can you offer an opinion about them? I am so tired of the guessing game with food if my cheap thermometer works, and waiting for the dial to rise.
